From your experiences which suspension should I go for? Cost and road performance are my criteria.
Option 1 (Coils lowered) 3%  3%  [ 1 ]
Option 2 (Coils standard) 0%  0%  [ 0 ]
Option 3 (rubber, hi lows conversion) 35%  35%  [ 11 ]
Option 4 (Hydrolastic) 61%  61%  [ 19 ]

Yes you can, if you watch what the pressure ratings are. But why reinvent the wheel if new steel lines can be got.

BTW external rust on the back part of the pipes doesn't mean impending doom. Mine were like this when bought 15 years ago- I wire brushed, rust converted then painted them, and they are still fine.

Certainly can, a mate is in the process of a resto on his roundie, and he has had the lines made out of high pressure hose, ( from Pirtek i think ), i can ask him if you like, about the lengths of the hoses and anything else he done.
Time will tell as to whether they last or not, but i can't see why they wouldn't , as they are covered with the plates.

Hey Doc,
I have photo here, I think the pitting is a bit to bad? Not sure I could rest at ease. My whole car was rusted actually

I do have access to hydraulic line at work (1/4" 3000psi should do the trick. All hydraulic hose requires 4 x greater burst pressure than rated anyhow. So really peak pressure can be 12000 psi which is too much pressure to think about :D

I don't think most people would notice a bit of hose in the bottom section of enbine bay instead of tube??????

OK yeah that is pretty badly rusted mate!
I would replace the pipes with steel again, or high pressure plastic line, or hydraulic hose.
There is a thread here somewhere on this, I'll look for it tomorrow.

I want to put hydro in my traveller, I reckon I'm going to use hose and maybe even run them through the sills

By this you mean J844 air brake lines from something like a semi trailer?
There is lots of nylon hoses out there, but J844 is the only sort designed and approved for air brake systems on trucks and trailers.

Thanks for the feedback all,

Good to know someone has some bags Doc if I get in trouble, cheers

Does anyone have hydro lines as the back end of mine are fairly rusted and I should really put new ones on if I am going to stick with my origanal plans of using the hydro. :?:

Anyone hear tried or been in car with coil shocks setup?

I will contact Dave R, thanks

Not hard to make up your own lines, but as the Doc has said John at Mini King has them.

I had Front and Rear Coil Overs in one of the Mokes, but only to increase load carrying capacity. When fully loaded, it was very nice, but empty or with a little bit of stuff in it, it was horrible.

If you're after a softer ride, you can also look at the moulton smootha-rides. I've never used them myself, but I've heard that they live up to their name. They were designed by Alex Moulton, as an option to take the harshness out of rubber cone suspension.

It sounds like reconditioning your hydro is the best bet, but hey, what's wrong with more options?

i hated how high my old hydro clubby sat when it was all filled properly.
i'm really looking foreward to nice stupidly low suspension on my new 850 8) 8)

If it is that low can you still call it suspension?

I don't care how it looks. I am not a vain wally that wants to look cool. (how can anyone look cool in a 40 year old car with no suspension?)
I want a smooth ride just like it was made with.

Ditto.
Ive driven both rubber and hydrolastic cars and the Hydrolastic was a huge improvement, and can be tweeked if you need.

One for the dry suspension camp over here. I got rid of my hydrolastic, replaced it with lovely dry suspension. The handling is far better, ride is less wallowy, and finally I can get the car sitting level instead of too high at the back.

I do have to slow down more for speed bumps than I did with the hydro, but it is a Mini after all.

hydro all the way, only reason they ran dry cone was because it was cheaper.

little bit more work to modify for performance, but the ride quality is a million times better.

68rusty, you really ought to find a better car to restore, thats probably the worst one i've ever seen :)

I remember reading a Solis book where he refers to Hydro mods.

His solution for the raised rear was to increase system pressure and shorten the Hydro bag Rod.

Anyone got that book?
