That one is a real Weber too. Great chook cooker.
You are thinking of Mark Webber...

Yeah, funny how they (and dellortos) stay in tune too, unlike an SU. You don't die wondering if you have the right 1/700 needles in it..

I can say the same thing about my HS6 which i modded under Vizard instruction. 3 years and is is still good in all weather, only need to top up the dash pot damper occasionally.
I like big single carbs.

Eh? What? SU's don't "go out of tune"! Once they're set, they keep working almost forever IMHO. Every case I've seen of the "SU going out of tune" was due to some other problem, like points or bad air filters etc.

Give me a single SU over a weber any-day! I get 90% of the performance with so much more simplicity, no tubes or jets or crap to muck about with.

cheers,

Jacob

More than 90 according to those who have done back to back testing. But I agree about the side draft noise

I actually thought they were on about putting their motors on a BBQ......

Yeah, as VulcanBB18 says, SU's like your BBQ's and Desoto's don't go 'out of tune'. I haven't yet seen screws or nuts that turn themselves. When it does appear that the carb is 'going out of tune' it is a sign that something else is wearing out, usually rings. They might have 700+ needles available but that only allows for a finer tune to get the best, most in terms of economy (and less Carbon  ) from your engine.

The difference in performance with a properly set up HIF44 vs Weber & Delorto, is almost academic in terms of HP, but the torque is usually slightly better as is ecconomy with the HIF.

Main drama with the earlier SU's is the spindle wear/throttle body wear which causes air leakage and thus leaner mixture and idling problems over time.

I think this is the fault Dr Mini was alluding too.

I agree that when new, SUs are good. But, they wear out. Just about all the HS series carbs on Minis still running are 30-50 years old, have a guess how many would by now have had a new throttle shaft and bushes fitted?
I'd bet it's way less than 50%..
So, no wonder you get air leaks, hard starting, crook idling, bad synchronisation (with twins) etc.
Sure, you can fit new bushes (along with a new shaft) but on an SU that never had them, It's not a job for DIY with a pistol drill.
And I hear it ain't cheap to get done properly by SU Midel either.
I just prefer carbys that have real bearings and seals on their shafts, that is all. 15 years now since a float needle valve, seat and gasket kit went into the Dellorto, and it's still running great.

I dunno about side-draught Webers, but downdraught progressive Webers (DGV, DCD, DFV) wear in the throttle shafts just like an SU. As do side draught Solex which look very similar to a DCOE.
