Mate, if your just going down once then just hire them, there is a servo/ski shop at the entrance of cooma which sells them. I know you are supposed to carry them but in the 5 years ive been driving to Perisher I have never once needed them. No point in blowing cash and buying something which you will not use.

Well I guess that's the question. do these hire places actually do such small sizes considering how few cars have wheels this size?

According to this they do.

don't even think about it, besides getting a fine when you get stopped (I've been stopped to check for chains a couple of times) - no sideways traction, and you can't use your brakes or the rope will slide and cut the valve off, and that's if the rope doesn't get sliced off by the brake caliper first...

didn't you read my post and look at the picture? I've hired mini size chains a couple of times - ring them up and ask, some won't have any, others will

You said 10 inch, not 12, just wanted to be clear.
Besides, if somewhere can supply them for say $100-$150 which is how much they ought to cost based on UK/EU prices (although we all know how that normally works out) i'm happy having my own set. I'm can't see myself selling this car anytime, so it's a long term investment.

and again as to seifer's post, just cos the manufacturer's fitting sheet has it listed does not mean that the place will have that size.

I am happy that several snow chain makers make the size, just wanted to know if anyone had any direct experience in australia of buying (or renting) 12 inch chains, so far, it seems the only answer is to call up all the places individually and ask!!

Thanks all.

PS, did have a look at the ebay link, nice selection there, about 4 options for 12 inch ones.

the diameter for both size tyres are basically the same - if a chain will fit a 10" mini tyre, it'll fit a 12" mini tyre

165/70/10 against 165/60/12
