Fuchs formula 60 - fantastic oil pressure, I put it in my cooper s and I've been driving it around - before I put it in the oil pressure sat around 50, now it's 70-80

Neither of our cars have a cooler at the moment. Barney's pressure with GTX2 is fine around town, but after a freeway run it drops badly. A few miles later at sedate speeds and it recovers. Motor's only done ~10,000 miles.
OTOH, Mini Ha-Ha has over 50psi at idle after a freeway run. So, Barney's about to get some Valvoline SF 20W/50 too. This is the cheap stuff in the black 4L bottle with white label, around $9 - $11 each.

Does an oil cooler help in the grand scheme of things? i.e makes the oil last longer etc... How would you plumb it into a std clubby?

Can always try different oil cause if i don't like it i'll change it

That Calver fellow had a good article about oil coolers on the minispares website.
Here's the link.

http://www.minispares.com/Article.aspx?aid=179

Need to remember though that he is talking about the UK and they naturally have different weather and driving conditions to Australia, but he does make interesting points about modern oils and the huge improvements over the stuff from yesteryear..

Other than that I like to use light olive oil in my deep fryer.

I use BP Course Plus 25W/60 and have 25-30psi at idle, 60-70psi at running speed all year no matter how hot or cold it is. But I work for BP (who also owns Castrol) so I'm biased.

I have not tried Formula R 25W/60 yet. Maybe next oil change.

On my old engine I used the cheapest, thickest oil available, as it used approximately 5 litres of oil every 1000kms or thereabouts..... the oil wasn't in there quick enough to break down. Upside is I never needed to do an oil change

On decent motors (back when my motor was decent) I ran Penrite HPR30 or 40 (not 50!), depending on how smokey the motor was. At work we will soon be getting Millers oil from the UK, which I believe comes in a special variety for motors with the gearbox in the sump, like Minis. I will try that when I get my reco motor in. Its a bit pricey mind you, but I'll give it a try.

Well I succumbed to the advice put forward here over the last 2 days and bit the bullet, went to super crap and bought a tub of HPR 30. Well ****** me dead, the pressure shot up to 70-75 on initial start up and settled on 70 when warm(i warm the car through for 5 mins or so before taking off). On the monaro hwy, sat on 65-70 and down to 55-60 at idle at full warm. Very impressed and more than worth the extra dollars over the GTX. The best thing about it too is the drop in noise in the box and the smoother changes - it is like a new car!!

Can I vote again in the poll?? I think I will stick to it from now on...old dogs can learn new tricks!!

I've got a bit of Mobil, a bit of Valvoline and some Castrol in there now since the car dumped atleast 4 littres of oil twice from the timing cover oil seal yesterday on the freeway (or whatever pathetic excuse for a freeway the M5 is) - Obviously I then got a tow truck - the tow truck guy is now sending me x-mas cards he knows me so well.

Ha what a crack up! I had my own towie when i was in canberra. AF&DT towing, Tony is a great guy and treats all cars with kid gloves. He knows my phone number off the top of his head, everytime i rang he'd answer by going where is it now? Used to charge me less than 1/2 price but then a mini is less than half a load yea?

Your's is Tony, mine is Bobby - Either way I'd rather see less of the tow truck.

It is fantastic - had a -3 start-up in canberra this morning and pressure was there straight away and no timing chain rattles or tappett noise. Gobsmacked!

Pissed and amazed

NAV hasn't been on a tow truck for 3 months now.
But as it turns out my best mate up here is good mates with a towie.
