Cmon who was it! :?: :) :D

You would be surprised to learn I am sure that drums in certain conditions drums stop better than discs. You would be a fool to deny this. If a car is driven in traffic at moderate speeds it is arguable whether discs are any advantage at all. The problem with mini drums is they have to be adjusted all the time which is one reason I am looking at putting self adjusting brakes on the rear. At low speeds a good drum brake will always stop quicker than a disc brake due to the way the linings are pulled onto the drum. These brakes do not work well in reverse due to the fact they are pushed away from the drum.

Hmmmm, might be sounding like a bit of a broken record on the subject but my 9 1/4 inch discs seem to do the job OK

Two Grand????!!!!! You must have more money than me!!
I could get you a 9 1/4 inch setup for less than half of that - FITTED!!!!
Just need 12" mags. Personally I like 12" mags so I don't see it as a problem, but you know, each to their own.

Go the new discs for sure... IMO this is the first mod you should do before you start 'hotting up' any car. Being able to stop is more important that being able to go fast!

So its looking good.

My fully reconditioned S 7.5" discs cost me $1400 they were fully reconditioned with a lot of new bits in there so there was not any surprises so far.... But the rear suspension isn't fixed so they haven't been used too much. If you look around you might find some at the cheaper end of the scale.

Brake fade should only happen after repeated heavy braking which leaves your drums unable to get rid of the built up heat and then you loose braking, from what you said(if I remember correctly) you were just going around town. Unless you are really pushing it they shouldn't get this hot.

If you are really taking your mini to the mechanics every month and paying for your brakes to be adjusted I would get disks as it will save some money, time and effort.

drums when you push hard have always been able to pull me up OK, only reason I got disks was because I had to for rego, and without a booster you need the same or higher pedal pressures for disks anyway.

Anyway... should i just keep getting the mechanic to regularly (at least monthly! ) adjust the drums...

Learn to adjust 'em, it's a PITA but not that hard. Beats payin' to get it done.

Other options could be Honda bits or I think I saw reco'd setups from miniimports in the for sale section cheap recently.

Sorry disc brakes all the way. My 7.5s stop really well (un-assisted). They do fade if you work them too hard though, like going full-throttle full-brake down hill, instead of using the gears. Remember, brakes are cheaper to rebuild than gearboxes

I have driven a couple of drum brake Minis - single and twin leading shoe. They do 'stop' and you can lock them up. If you try really, really hard. I hate them myself. I find it annoying to adjust my rear brakes at yearly intervals, wouldn't like to be adjusting front drums every week!

I'd prefer a set of 7" Cooper brakes over drums any day, simply because they auto-adjust.

I REFUSE TO VOTE!

I don't agree with either of the poll choices.
In my opinion it's:
- Drums for road
- Disks for track

Both my van and clubby ran drums (and an overbore 1275 Cooper S block).
Never any fade, no problems stopping. But I always kept 'em adjusted.

I would never attempt any racing without disks - just asking for trouble.
And sure, disks will pay for themselves in the end if you have to pay for brake adjustments etc

I drove a HG panel van for years (clocked it) with drums all round and never hit anyone that I didn't mean to
If ever there was a car that needed disks, that was it

I prefer to keep the Beef Meister original, plus I dont want to spend that moola on disc brakes when our commodore has em.
Call me old fashioned but GO THE DRUMS!

willy if youre such a driver you could for starters be a big boy and learn to adjust your own brakes - all you have to know is how to turn a spanner and how to turn the wheel. C'mon if you can put on an exhaust you must be able to adjust the drums.

Oh and its a mini for F's sake, who takes it to the mechanic to put discs on? Try to do it on your own, brake a caliper pot, spend another $900 for a new one and be grateful for the learning experience.

Nope they get done every 3-6 months when it has its service and tune.
I'm a driver, not a grease monkey.
I'd rather pay someone to do the work on it.
But maybe i'll have a go at putting the discs on.
But then again... its brakes.
I don't like putting the responsibility of that on myself... if i get the mech to fit them, then i have them to blame if something goes wrong

And yes, Kevin loves me
Not as much as Michael Jackson does, though.
