I was recommended a Doring Fuel Catalyst for my car by my mechanic.
He recommends them for all his customers

I've been running my car on unleaded (which I know doesn't have hardened seats for unleaded) without flash lube for years now, and never had a problem.

I'd trust my mechanic with not only my car but my life.

Anyone know if these things are a hoax and I just happen to have not had any problems, or if they actually work?

It's a hoax. You just happen to have no problems probably becvause you haven't done enough miles yet for valve seat recession to set in, or you already have hardened seats in there. It's not benefiting you at all.

Similar if not identical devices have been proven to do nothing.

My car has been running unleaded for years. It has not had hardened valve seats fitted and I use no additives or catalysts. I drive it everyday.

Some people talk about "lead memory" but I think it is probably more along the lines of "work hardening".

Almost 100, 000 K's isn't enough for it set in?
If that's the case, I don't know why people bother with flash lube.

I have a feeling the valves will not be recessed due to a totally different attribute altogether, but that's a story for another time
