If you are going to knock a hole in the car to let water in you might as well do it up high for maximum damage.

Roof aerials have killed many a 1275LS, they leak and the water kills the roof from then inside out and sends rust down the 'A' pillars to kill the 'A' panels and sill's.

funny that, my car had a roof antenna as standard and the area where the hole is/a pillar would be the most rust free bits on the car  dont ask how

The water probably leaked through the sun roof before it had a chance to get to the aerial!

Good point, i honestly didnt think about that

Hey Joshie,
You wouldn’t know what type, where it came from or even what it looked like?

Think I’m sufficiently scared off a roof mount, so either front guard or better still a concealed one (that works)

i've got one like this

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Secret-Conce ... 35b3cb089d

but i bought it local from an adelaide based ebay store which i can't find now.

works brilliantly in my daily magna wagon, got it inside the back side window, hardly even notice it's there. works great except in multi-level carparks and my carport which is like a cone of silence due to all the tin!

I don't know what all the fuss is about.
I've got a roof mounted aerial and don't have a problem.
If it ever did start to rust then I'd fix it. Same as when any other part of the van starts to rust.
I think it looks the ducks. 8)

Just a thought, what about all the Jap and cars with roof aerials. Do they all leak and rust???

But thats OEM: extra measures are taken to make sure it fits properly.
Problem with a mini roof is that none of it is flat, so some sides under a flat aerial base will always be a fraction higher than others, and water doesn't need much.

They sure look cool, I agree

I think if I ever did it, i'd make sweet love to it with a tube of sikaflex though..

Surely a good sealant would solve the problem under and around the edges. OK, I'm just trying to convince myself a roof aerial will work.

If you are puting new wires in the A pillar - run a length of string and leave it there for future use - make sure it is more then double the length and leave one end up in the roof lining and the other behind the dash lining - easier next time then

I ran a small black roof aerial on my van for many years and it never leaked. There was already a 15mm hole in the roof for an aerial when I bought the car. II just ran a little windscreen sealer around the base before attaching it.

Unipart used to sell a roof aerial as an accessory and I like the look of the roof aerial.

I had a window mount one in Barney, and it was crap.
I like my rubber one on the guard, reception is good- and if some tool tries to break it, it springs back. If they nick it I'll just stop at Jaycar and buy another, & screw the rubber bit on. :P
