I am about to do the final assembly of my new 1275 (1100s) motor and was wondering if there are any pointers and tips I should be aware of. The short motor is assembled, but I will be putting g'box, clutch/flywheel, head and ancilliatries on.

What process do I use when running in for the first time? (new cam, followers/pushrods pistons rings oil pump etc etc)

Has this been linked to Ausmini before?

Might be of interest here?

So if I have a new motor with new rings & cam, it is better to go out and bed the rings in and not worry about the cam?

No one has answered this yet, but why not do both? it only takes 10-15min to bed in the cam, then your done.

im not expert but when They rebuilt Vivs motor (suzi sport)
they said not to let it idle for too long at all. so 10 mins
to bed the cam in would be tooo long. but as i say im no expert.

But Mini man, the question is are your bores glazing while bedding in the cam - leading to loss of power and oil consumption for the rest of the engines life? I'd rather risk the cam than the bores!!! Not as much work to change a cam...

you don't bed the cam in at idle though ;)

Thanks guys.

Doc, the head gasket i have is what I was told was a metro turbo gasket. Is this gonna be OK for long term use? Do I use it dry, or with sealant of some sort. (sounds stoopid I know, but until I ask i don't know!!)

Cheers
Matt

Mini Mad, you also don't bed your rings in at 2000 rpm with no load... this is the problem - which do you bed in properly? rings or cam :?

Matt, i havn't seen anyone use any sort of gasket glue for the head gasket, just dry.

Yes that is also true, but i'm willing to bet that 10 or so minutes bedding the cam followers in is not going to adversely affect the life of the rings and/or their performance. I'm as keen as you though to find out what should take preference, if any.

That's the black BK450 one. It has a coating of lacquer on it, assemble it dry. Best gasket available for any use on a 1275.

OK this is what I do and I've built many an A series, just as a hobby mind you. Use el cheapo home brand oil, $5.00 for 5 litres stuff.

Spark plugs out turn it over at short spurts 'til you get oil pressure on the gauge or 'til the light goes out.

Whack in the plugs fire her up and get the timing close running at 3000 RPM for 15 minutes, to run inthe cam and lifters.

Change oil and filter to Penrite running in oil (hard to get) or use Valvoline running in oil.
Run engine for 100km varieing (spelling) the speed and putting it under load never letting it idle or ever sitting at one speed,

Change oil to same Penrite or valvoline above. Do 500km and then change oil and filter.

then all will be oakey dokey if you use a Non-friction modified oil for the next 1000km, Penrite is the best.
