You normally balance the flywheel when you do the crank (during a rebuild)- however most balancing shops have a balanced crank sitting there, just for doing random people's flywheels.

Thanks Doc. I suppose the supplier would do it for an extra cost.
Would a local shop be able to do it in situ (with pistons in place) if I take the block to them ? Is there much advantage gained ?

If you want the crank done, it has to be out of the motor- they spin it at 3000rpm or so and it reads out the balance error. Similar to doing a wheel& tyre. A bit is ground off a crankweb to balance it, then checked again.

Then the flywheel is bolted on the end and spun, drilled to balance, same method.

Then, the backplate is added, and same story again.

Finally the diaphragm is bolted on too, check all 3 possible positions and pick the best one for balance. Drill it if needed (usually not).

Unless you have lightened a flywheel or fitted an aftermarket one, BMC's original balance is pretty good. Usually...

OKay thanks for that. In your opinion is it worth having an aftermarket steel flywheel balanced if I'm not bothering with the crank ?

Definitely.
I'm sure Lindsay Seibler whould be able to point you to a place that does it separate, if all else fails post it to GR in Sydney.
You will need to balance the backplate and diaphragm with it.

Once you are moving you don't need a flywheel.

If the engine has balls it will accelerate up the hill faster than with a stock flywheel. 8)

Here is one of Matt Reads (Minimans) flywheels, i bought last year from him.

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... c&start=75

I have to say the difference is quite noticeable, and i have nothing bad to say about lightening the flywheel. Matt does a great job on these.
