the coke on an SU really isn't a choke as such, pulling the choke lever just drops the jet further down to a richer point of the needle.
and the SUs have a sort of artificial accelerator pump that is part of the design.
don't remember how it works but i read it in the bible the other night.
so that rules that out.
maybe big willy's engine is running lean? and pulling the choke just put it back to stoich ?
