With points dizzys...
If the test light is connected to 12V+ and the other to the -ve wire, the light will go out when points open.
However if you connect the light to ground and the -ve wire, it will come ON when points open.
Both methods give the same result.

With electronic kits things vary- some can be statically timed, others cannot.
