You can fit taper roller bearings to drum brake hubs, it's not hard at all.
Just remember to only torque the drum hub nuts to 60ft/lb though!. 150 will kill the smaller threads.

It's a rover and I believe has 8.4" Discs up front.

One bearing has just being replaced - i'm sure taper bearings would have been used.

I would:

1. Replace the ROVER rack with a DrMini Aussie Cam Gears rack - these are stronger, can be rebuilt and are filled with oil rather than grease for a longer life.

2. Convert from 8.4" to 7.5" setup

3. Buy 10" wheels with the same or more offset (as the tire width is 10mm less on 10" compared to 13") so that the fill your existing arches - you will need to check your existing offset and compare with wheels available to check positioning.

4. Keep your 13" wheels as you can always chuck them on if you like them but i'd sell them eventually

5. Enjoy mini driving as it was meant to be.

My car originally came with 12", i put 13x6's on it which looked great but the car sat too high for my liking and the suspension struggled to cope. I switched to 10's and never looked back.

There was a massive 25KG weight loss switching from 13's to 10's and the difference in the way the car drives and handles is like night and day.

Benefits include:
1. Minis are the only cars that have 10" - they are unique
2. Weight loss
3. Comfort (larger sidewall makes ride more compliant)
4. Cheaper Tires (but they do wear out faster)
5. Improved Handling

@ Michael
I have the larger Rover Disc brakes they are 8.4"
I am not sure what bearings were put in and the bearing that was replaced is making a slight clicking sound when i do right hand corners :/
The rack was fixed the first time as there was lots of play either side of 12 o clock position.
I do like what they have on there now but driving it every day and hearing the croaks in the front that have come along since i put the 13"s from 12" on is a little worrying.. I will keep the 13" and whip them out every once and a while.

@Harley
I don't mind changing bearings every couple of years i would back go down to 12"s but i have not found one in the design i like so ill give 10's a go.
I do like the handling the 10" give you and you have a bit more of a cushion from road noise and such.

@Convertible mini
I do like the white but i am not really a fan of that design :(

@fiji
Bearings cost $200 per side and to fix the rack i was charged $60 and its been going well for 2 months
I don't mind converting the discs and getting the new tyres but i don't want to get rid of the arches as there are holes drilled through the body and its to much of a hassle to plug the holes and re spray all the effected panels.
I would like to see how 10" look on the Rover sport pack arches which were designed for 13x6

@Mike
I might take you up on that offer, Did you do the disc conversion your self or pay someone else to? I am thinking of attempting it :?

Image
Looks a little off putting :/
But then this looks good.

Thanks for the forum link mike. I will have a read of the comments.

I think i will have to play around with lowering either end.
I have hilos in the back but i am thinking of putting them in the front.. I assume as i own a Rover it will take me twice as long to convert the front?

@mini mad
1. Is that the Dr mini that has posted above you? If so i will PM him about it
2. Do you know how long it takes to fit a steering rack?
3. Current wheels have an offset of ET-7 and the new 10" ones i am looking at getting have ET-7 Offset.. http://tinyurl.com/6vuy4aw is a link to the ones i am looking at
4. After reading Mikes post with the forum link I am thinking ill go ahead with it and hang onto them for a month and flogging them off. Someone has already pm'ed me and i have not put them for sale yet :D they are only 3 months old.
5. My car had 12" minlites on and they were fantastic compared to the 13"
6. I would like the handling back on them.

~

Does anyone know the difference with ET-3

Thanks for your suggestions and help guys!

Hi Danny,

This sounds like a CV joint is on the way out?
Bearings usually make a roaring type noise when they fail.

It only started when the bearing was changed.
At first i thought it was the new split pin rubbing on the plastic cap on the rims. :?

The rack was probably originally replaced with a new UK rack - these are useless and will die a quick death - as above PM drmini (Kev) and he can point you in the right direction to help you out.

That white car you can see has different track spacing front to rear (the rears stick further out indicating it's got drum brakes on the front) they would look good if sticking out further. It's also sitting high.

You'll want to put hi-los in the front to get the ride height sorted.

The difference between ET-7 and ET-3 is that the ET-3 will bring the wheel IN 4mm as long as you are talking the same width..but the number will be different as you're going from 13x7 to 10x6.

You want to go a higher number - something like ET-15 in a 10" to fill the guards.

Pump some numbers in this calculator and it will give you an idea:
http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

Check where your wheels fit currently and how much further they could come out bearing in mind you'll be going to a 165 tire.

Don't worry that there is no 10" there as diameter doesn't change the backspacing.

That clicking noise on turn definately sounds like your CV joint - check on full lock left and right, will probably only happen turning one way.

I wonder how hard it is to find a rim with an offset of -15.. :shock:

I am going to take the mini for a run full lock.. I might have to take another trip up to mini classic :D

I'd start here for something unique and awesome:
http://www.force-racing.co.uk/wheels-10/

Custom made to your offset (you choose the inner and outer size to match)

Have you had a look at the s style alloys that mini speed sell? They fit over the 8.4 inch disks, are 10" and require wide sports pack style arches. You'll find pictures of them on cars if you do a few Google searches but here's the link to the wheels.
