AFAIK there is no 12G941. Only 12G940 castings.
Some heads got decked a lot on top in manufacture, makes the casting numbers harder to read- the `1' may be a `0'.

Some heads got stamped next to the thermo housing with 12G938 or 12G1805, as I've said.

There were at least 5 different heads used this same 12G940 casting number (but various patterns), including 1100S, Mk2 S, Metro, MG Metro, Metro Turbo..
You'd think they could have used some extra numbers to avoid confusion..

Hmm... thanks for all that.

Supplementry questions

1) Was the 11-stud thing a definite factory standard across the board? It's evidently an easy modification, so easy to superficially 'fake'. Find a 12G940 casting, drill a couple of holes and Bob's your uncle???

20 What's the casting number for an AEG163?

Yes all Cooper S had 11 stud (actually 10 studs & 1 bolt) fixing.
Any 1275 head- 12G1316 or 12G940- can have the 2 holes drilled. Use a 1275 gasket to mark them out, and drill them square..... use a bench drill or mill.

AEG163 IS the casting number on that head.

they the only things the 940 heads came on?
my car has one with the 11 stud's (10 and one bolt) have no idea if that was standard or not?

originally had the smaller inlets till i swapped for the bigger 1.4"
don't recall what the exhaust valve size was but we left it standard anyhow.

i've been lookin at the timelines of south african production and it seems my car should have never had a 1275 in it? just wondering what else i might have come out of?

12G940 heads were used on all 1275s, from ~1968 on. Until the 1275LS and 1275 Moke, which both got the 12G1316 smog head. Same thing really, with air injection ports added.
Only the Cooper S and Clubby GT got the big inlet valves here in Oz. In UK, the MG Metro got them too.
In Sth Africa, I have no idea. What's the engine number prefix?

engine number:

10403JH2262

doesn't really collate to what i have seen posted around the place.
till i pulled the motor down i wasn't even sure that it was a 1275 because of all the oddities it had like the oil filter for one.
