What about the fact it only has one tank? Wasn't it just the smaller capacity very early s' that didn't have the rh tank?

2 tanks were std in Oz built S from 1965, but optional elsewhere (UK, UnZud).

So you've seen it??? Does the chassis plate match?..and does it still carry the body plate??

There are UK data bases that can date the FE number - would be interesting to see how it compares to the documented build date...

Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian,
I don't believe there is an FE plate fitted and the number plate on this car clearly relates to an 850 on the goverment register. As I suggested earlier, I think we have a set of papers from an S and an 850 put together with various bits.

Regards
Al

It wouldn't have been re-registered that would explain the number plate and maybe some office boffin has listed it as an 850? Really need to view the car to form a definite opinion, being a deceased estate maybe the sellers are a bit sketchy on it's history as well.

The current rego number belongs to an 850, first registered in March (I think??) 67, so the Cooper S the papers relate to (HP2848) does not seem related in any way to DF4851.

It really would need to be inspected before you spend money - but.... Personally I would not place any store in the number plates fitted. It comes from a deceased estate, has been a racer - maybe they just attached plates that were on the shelf (I have a few spare myself).

The basic shell is English - unfortunately the photos don't allow an opinion on the FE plate or the body plate - but these would be readily checked in person... The engine could be right - it has the proper heater tap.... The interior door trim looks the real deal but not the exterior. There are other bits and pieces that are right ..and some that are not.

Did NZ get hydro 850s???

We need an inspection.... :)

Cheers, Ian

Also from the pics the top dash rail is not covered in black material, the Ash tray is wrong, regulator is in the wrong place and in the correct place for a 850 the Heritage papers in the pics are for a Tweed Grey Car. Upholstery is wrong

yes we did get hydro 850.

It looks like a 850 thats been "S" a rised

Wheels, Speedo, Motor

Also the plate on the car is from a 850 which would be correct for the car presented

Not an Cooper in my opinion

If it wasn't 600k away I would go and have a look.

"It looks like a 850 thats been "S" a rised ..."

Unfortunately that's pretty much what the factory did.... I looked the photos to try and find something right or wrong - but there's really nothing beyond a few bolt on bits (door exteriors don't have upper trim), wrong master cyl, wrong air tubing, wrong seats - but right door trims.. right ID plate (with the right numbers??)

I would be looking for personal history - deceased estate - but presumably there are family members.. and maybe the body ID - its pretty insignificant..and easily overlooked. Jan 65 is a pretty early 1275.

Be intersting to know what happened to the (Austin) S that seems to be missing from the boot ...

Cheers, Ian

The block appears to be a small bore (not an S block) and from what I can see, the brake pedal is an standard one, not higher like an S should be. I don't think there is any way the car should be described as an S, it is mostly an NZ new '67 850 that would probably have left the UK CKD in form later in '66.

Deceased estate "barn find"

That would have to rate with up there with the usual cliches

1. Genuine reason for selling
2. Owner going overseas
3. First to see will buy.

I always like "Hard to find"
I don't want something that is hard to find. Imagine walking a round a carpark for hours looking for a car that is hard to find.

I bought the super you-beaut thrust bearing from a certain moderator that advertised it as "hard to find". He was right. I can't find the damn thing. I thought I left it in a drawer in the spare bedroom but it isn't there now.
