well,,, it sounds to me like you`d be keen on (at least) a really hot BIG BIG BIG roady 5-port engine ,,, like maybe 1400-1500ccs-ish. My own roady is 1510cc with just a mild cam & 10:1 comp-ratio,,, so it`s all smooth & drivable ,,, but it does beat most things around, but not all the rice burners nor the go-hard wrx`s & well sort-out V8 mobs,,, there`s some pretty quick cars out there

but it holds it`s own quite nicely concidering it`s on pump fuel, drive your grandma to the shops & back ,,, & lasts so well

or """more what i`m thinking for you""" (by the sounds of it)--> a 1293-ish turbo charged 5-port

i doubt you`d get a turbo injected twinky for 10K unless you did a whole-lotta-yourself-ness & scabed around the wreckers for 2nd hand bits & did most of the machining & mods & building & fabricating of it all yourself , that style of donk i sell for around $20K

sooo,,, my thoughts (with your cost framed) is the turbo 1293-ishcc 5-port & there`s absolutely nothing wrong with that,,, i love em :-)

but yeah i`m not a big fan of that green car i must admit , sorry,,, just not my kettle of fish ... but each to their own , i won`t knock it.

have fun deciding & also have fun once you have decided :-) the fun really does start there :-)
cheers
Matt

I like Matts thinking....1293 / 1310 turbo. Doesn't need to be over the top for around town. Think about it......you can break the speed limit in 1st gear if your pulling 7000 - 8000 RPM with the right diff ratio!

That's my next motor....A+ metro turbo motor cleaned up with 21st century know how and an intercooled turbo. Nothing stupid, just fun and reliable!

Cheers Shane

Twin webers
Or a huge turbo poking out the front of the bonnet with the grille replaced with a massive made to fit intercooler.. Fat 7" front tyres with sticky soft racing tyres so you get traction and massive arms to control the torque steer you'll get from it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the longevity of an engine with three main bearings after you ram 120 hp+ worth of air down its throat? Especially with a bore/stroke ratio from the age of tractor engines.

I don't have a problem with the aseries, I wouldn't have a mini any other way, but if your keen to have power and reliability the sad fact is you can only choose one. Why not root around, there were a few late model blocks being converted to the aseries gearbox that have gone quiet, buy someone else's project?

Or better yet fit a Mircra engine, low boost and squeeze 100 or more reliable horses. Probably cheaper too.

Also, as matt suggested even in top form minis never were known for their straight line speed. Twin cam, high revving, low displacement divided across as many bores as possible. With a close ratio box, it worked for enzo ferarri, not exactly the m.o of an aseries

On their website they do not recommended use in high powered minis, stock 1275 only. Unless you go to a noisy straight cut box.

I reckon either go 7 or 8 port alloy head, fuel injection, electronic ignition, and a PROPERLY selected turbo (just one off the shelf will give too much lag) supercharger could be good but too but there's more room for a turbo in a cross flow headed mini.

They used to reckon no more than 90lb/ft torque, or it would stuff the box.
My stroker has 113..

Just bung a taller diff in, it's much cheaper.

I like a good N/A big bore A series, stroked or not. Hold the turbos, they just help things break sooner.

I've never had mine on the dyno but they recon it should be 110 bhp from Downton when it was built
