I've lived in Redfern for 2 months in between moving places (yea I know a whole 2 months, I'm so disadvantaged, I'd bring out my tiny violin, but were too poor and had to pawn it to buy medicine).

Walked through there even in the early morning hours (on the way home from work) and since my uni (UTS) is pretty close by, I'd also walk home all the time allong the whole Regent street, central stn, redfern stn route. And where I lived was surrounded by housing comms. Had some trouble only once.
It sure aint pretty - junkies, dirty, bag snatchers at the station - (though the terrace parts away from the housing towers are very nice) but its no Harlem. Its still normal people, trying to make normal living. Parts of Redfern (Surry Hills way) are even becoming sorta fashionable because of the small terraces and the inner city spillover. Though it ain't gonna be the next real estate boom like Bondi, or Darlinghurst, everyone's been waiting for it to happen but its decades away, when the housing comms go away.

The only really dangerous part of Redfern is the slums area (like 2 streets) next to the station - there you've got dailight streetcorner drug deals and robings and everything.
Thats where the whole rioting thing started from.

I now live back at Coogee, which is considered a reasonably nice area, but we still have a giant housing commision estate next door.

Yep what Mike said pretty much sums up Redfern... except around the station isnt very bad anymore.. after the riots they cleaned it all up.. and the cop shop is now where the old tnt buildings were.
I'm on the border of surry hills.. so its a pretty nice place. I love redfern, never want to move :D I talked to one of my neighbours who doesnt ever use his garage.. so he's letting me rent it for $15 a week, which seems pretty good to me

Back onto the alarm subject....
I had a mate who had a black widow alarm, you know the one with that spider thing on it.. and the alarm was that crap, you could literally walk up and kick the car and it wouldnt even go off. We used to work at supercheap auto and one day someone through a rock threw his front windscreen and smashed it and we heard the smashing from inside and the alarm DIDNT EVEN GO OFF...

Most alarms do have a sensitivity adjustment. But the one in my EA Ford was so touchy that starting my Mini and revving next to it would set it off..
Or if the wind blew hard, or a truck went past, or... :x
Finally I got it fixed!

What do you guys think of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4553333125

I've never actually heard of the brand (Tenon) do insurance companies look at the brand of alarm? I know some of the features will most likely not work on a mini (without some modification.. eg: the "auto central locking", and "remote trunk release") but it seems to have some good features.. I like the remote alarm that "Reports Live Status of the Car". Does this look any good? Or a pile or rubish?

Thanks people

I wouldn't buy a system off ebay, especially if it has the downloadable wiring diagram on the auction page.

I don't think it is possible to stop a professional thief taking a car if he wants it. I still think the best method is a silent tracking and disabling device that is totally hidden and does not set off alarms. You can then wait until the cops are there and stop the car. The only trouble with that idea is it costs big dollars and has a limited area of operation.
