Hi Graham!

The boss has spoken 8) 3 degrees it is. I've booked in with Jim Hunters Suspension in two weeks time for the measurement and alignment.

The explanation for turn in makes a lot of sense. There is certainly a huge amount of grip in this compound compared to A008's that's for sure. Good tip about the tyre pressure. So best grip I should aim for 31 hot.

I finished putting in the lower adjustable arms tonight. I have ordered new longer tie rod arms so they will go in this week which will throw the steering way off...

Thanks! This has been a good lesson in mini handling!

I am lucky in that my garage is pancake flat and level which will make it easy to do these measurements. Free wheel alignments anyone?? :P

That is the same type of gauge that I have been using for the past 15 years. Though that particular one is designed for wide five speedway wheels, check the size of the centre before buying.
You can do a lot with them, sometimes you will need to make an adaptor to suit different wheels that you can't get the magnet onto.
Remember that if you stick a turntable under the front you will also need to lift the rear the same height.

Only make one change at a time, you don't want to confuse yourself changing too many things at once. Keep a book of changes.
Sometimes a big change will tell you more than a small change. (but within reason) You could make three small changes before you realise you are going the wrong direction! One big change might tell you if you are headed the right way even if you go too far!

I set toe-in/out with a sting line, a tape measure and a steel ruler, it takes a bit of setting up but it is very accurate if done properly.

Thanks Morris1100, I will definitely look into buying my own setup, as I am the tinkerer type

hey Lillee, yep sorry about that , got em now,,, piles of them unchecked for a while

sorry everyone :-( bit brain-dead of me hey>? :-)

anyways,,, for the line-restrictors--> we used a small thin brass washer with a hole in the center & stuck it inbetween the hydro pipe/hose fitting

undo it,,, slip in the washer,,, do up the pipe again,,, the washer will flex to the ball-shape of the fitting seat & the brass helps it seal all nice

sorry but i`ve forgotten where we got the washers from,,, it was something pretty common actually ... been racking my brain for a while over that cause i`ve had a few calls about it since i said it

anyways,,, carry on :-)

Hey Matt, Thanks for reply. What size hole to you recommend? I think I read 3mm or 4mm? How thin is the washer? must it be one of those really thin ones as in paper or carboard thin or a standard washer thickness, say 1mm?

Many thanks for all the answers! 8)

Back in the day, some racers used to put a needle valve in the lines so they could adjust it.

The blokes that made those GTI SuziMinis on the south coast used to remove the hydro lines and charge each corner up separately... but IMO if doing that you might as well turf the hydro and fit rubber cones, as the fluid ain't going anywhere on bump. :?

Nah just want to investigate making them a little more stiff to see if it is worth the effort. I wouldn't want them to be entirely isolated.

I'll go the adjustable Gaz shocks first at the front and see how that goes since it's the easiest to do. It might be enough

RE: the washers.
I think we used to use a one cent piece with a hole in it, if my memory serves me.

cut up a feeler gauge - one of the thick ones you don't use like .035"

What size diameter? or is it a matter of trial and error?

Sorry don't have spare bags to measure anything...

Hey Grant,

Yeah all sorted. So settings are as follows:

Front
Camber -2.0
Castor +3.0 (front left is 2 7/8, that's as close as he got)
Toe 1/16 Out

Rear (unchanged)
Camber -1
Toe 1/16 In

She's handling great! I thought A008's were good! Oh boy I reckon she's at least twice as grippy now than she was back then and that's saying something!

The best addition to the whole package was the front Gaz adjust shocks that put on to replace the (admittedly) old shocks. Transformed the car! does not lift up on acceleration as much, nearly no lean into the corners.

I set it to 8 clicks from soft, as 10 felt a little harsh for the road. Track probably a different story though? I bought a new helmet by the way so when are we going for a Wakefield Park run? :P

What do you have them set to at the front out of interest? Not that it matters maybe because I have hydro and you're running dry?

When are you planning to go? I highly recommend it, takes only minutes and transforms car handling... Especially since mine was way off after I put in the lower control arms

well Chong finally i have booked RED in for a 4 W/A this sat at Jim Hunter Blacktown.

I think i will go simillar settings to yours but i have Dunlop Formula R's on and to be honest i quite like them espec for the price at $140 ea i think they were.

only think i might do is the rear camber being around .5 degree as i dont like the rear comming round too much, and when i had more on it thats how it felt sooooo i will see.

i will keep you posted

Grant

Sounds good! Let me know how you go.

Yeah not sure how soft the Dunlop tyre walls are in comparison to the AO32R walls, I feel this has a lot to do with the sloppiness of the handling when not set up properly.

Coming next Wednesday???

Ok, so had the WA on sat and was pretty happy all n all, I had not had one done in around 8 years........and had "played" with it a few times so i was a little unsure how it would be and it was not too far off, front Right was 2 degree neg camber, 1/8 toe and caster was 8 degrees +, Left was 1.5neg camber, caster was 6 degrees and toe was a tad over 1/16.
Rear was 1 degree neg on right and 0 toe and 1.5 neg camber with 0 toe.

Set it to above with 2 degree camber front, kept 6 degree caster and 1/16 toe, it feels pretty good all n all.
