Hey Danny, If the engine was blowing smoke then I would get the head overhauled but if not much smoke when you did drive it then I would put it back together with new gaskets and see how the oil consumption is. But thats just me being impatient at wanting to drive a recent aquisition

The car blew no smoke when driving along.. Just oil spurting onto the drive shaft and then going on the underside of the car / exhaust and smoking up.
I have given the block a good clean and the head a good de grease and pressure wash to get rid of as much gunk as possible.

I poured gasoline into the the combustion part of the cylinder head to see if any of the valves leaked. 1,2,3 did not leak after 10min of letting it sit but the fuel level in number 4 went down 1mm over 10min. Should i be concerned or is this acceptable?

Cheers.

It looks pretty good, I'd say the valves are not seating too good in #4, why not pull all the valves out for a looksee?
If it's the exhaust valve not seating properly, you run the risk of that valve burning out further down the track.
If they all look good, wire brush all the crap off them and out of the ports, but get the valves and seats recut if they need it.

Wilfully obtuse.

I am not saying it should pass with a major oil leak.

I am saying 3 things.

1) The issues that have been described should have been obvious from the outset and are not very significant issues. Danny knew before he bought it that it needed attention on the head gasket. Indeed, he has been so quick and efficient at taking the head off since the failed blue slip that it seems even more peculiar that this wasn't done beforehand since it's clearly a job he is comfortable with.

2) If you go to get a blue slip done, you should always clean the engine first. There are "normal" oil leaks which the average inspector is better off not noticing than being expected to be able to have them "explained" to him.

3) There are some blue slippers who are not either idiotic or fascist who will inspect a 45 year old car and give it the latitude it deserves and requires.

Some low level maintenance and a reasonable blue slipper would have seen Danny driving around in his Moke by now.

Matt, did you even read the whole thread? I am now repeating myself a third time. If you stopped hyperventilating for a moment you might realise what I'm trying to say.

Yep, i read the whole thing. I even understand what you are saying. What i don't understand is why you are saying it in the first place. But that's all i'm going to say about that.

As for you cylinder head danny, that is a very slow leak and you probably won't notice anything because of it. I would suggest that if you are expecting to use the engine for the long term, that you get it all checked out now that you have it off. But if you are thinking of bigger and better things for the car, then maybe just hold off.
