massive massive f*cking ditto right there...

the high beam of one of my standard 1970 vintage Lucas sealed beams stopped working a while ago, I replaced it with one I had laying around... now my car has mesh headlight covers, and never gets washed anyway so the headlights were utterly filthy. I do a lot of night time country driving - I don't have an issue with night time visibility - why do people need it to be like daylight???

If you really need that much light to see at night you should either stay at home, get your eye's tested or get someone else to drive. If I'm driving to Sydney at night I don't need to see the Harbour Bridge from Hornsby!I'm a half blind old fart and I can see fine with my H4's.

to dig a slightly old thread you can but kits that had halogen low beams with HID high beams just make sure you get a 55w kit as the 35w will be no better than the standard sealed beams without a relay on low.

It's not just the brightness of the lights, there's a few other pieces of equipment that must be installed, such as water jets and self levelling beams.

The "for off road use" is just a disclaimer for people who run them illegally on the road. I don't see why you couldn't run them, it's just a lot of messing around and even then there's no guarantee what you come up will be allowed on the road.

I'd speak to a road transport authority before doing anything.

Don't fit them if you like good lights, yes they are white & they are bright but you can not aim them to see what you want without being an irresponsible twat & blinding oncoming traffic. I did it & changed back to Hella inserts with good quality H4 globes & now they point where I want without pissing off others. :wink:

I could be wrong but its my understanding that in Queensland its also illegal to use aftermarket ballasts on your HID kits.

The kit that Wallie mentioned looks to be an excellent kit.
Best of both worlds.
Standard halogen low beam for around town and HID for Hi Beam.
Love them or Hate them more cars are being fitted with HID lights standard now than ever before.

I can only speak for NSW in which case HID lights,

Cannot be retro fitted,
Must be self leveling,
Must be self cleaning

They are a fantastic light for YOU and absolute crap for anyone else driving towards you. I think if you want to get really technical you can digest ADR's for the biblical version.


Unless you have a car Pre-ADR :D :D My BMW X1 has Bi-Xennon, and the lights really shine up the road signs to the point of annoying.... But on the mini, I am more than happy with the performance of sealed beam Lucas lights on my Clubman and Cooper S

I don't think these lights are legal for retrofitting in NSW even if your car pre-dates ADRs.
As Scott (who would know) has suggested.

I was looking at the Suzi Swift Sport a little while back. They have fitted HID on high beam only, reverting to halogen at low.

I don't know if they're admitting they're as annoying as hell, or its a point of legality perhaps for some other markets.

the main irritating bit is people tend to grab 6000k (like daylight) lumin so since there not focused or aimed its basically like having the sun shine in your eyes 4300k is a bit brighter than standard bulbs but not a blue/white, as mention the reflective coating on signs are massively annoying, the kit i posted i had in my micra but 35w, altho the hid's lit up everything withing 20m beyond that were hopeless 35w halogens are near useless i think the beam went a whole 5 meters infront of me and thats providing there was no street lights lol

HID hi's shining down my street, only just shines past my neighbors driveway as most shines up and i couldnt adjust my headlights enough to shine down.

Multiple years ago (1970s) I had a HQ Holden Premier - the one with twin lights - one high beam one low beam. I replaced the high beam light with an aircraft landing light. 55 watt but flat smooth glass lens. Don't know the colour temp but out on the Newell Highway at night you could see for a couple of Ks
