Go electronic - you wont regret it.

Simon BBC in the uk has good ones at a very reasonable price if you find the locally supplied ones exceed your budget.

Ok, the weather gets cold again in the early mornings and once again I struggle to get the Mini starting! She will kick in unless I give it a squirt of auto start into the carby and even then will stall soon after again

since the beginning of this post from last year, I have upgraded to the electronic distributor and all was going great until recently.

this week I've put in new spark plugs and that achieved nothing either. Any clues to my problem please??

1968 Mini-Matic with a 998 engine
Electronic Distributor less than a year old (Oct 2013)
driving rough - I've replaced the plugs and tried using the colortune to get the right mixture to no avail
When I put the choke on it revs fine for a few seconds then dies away and will stall

Any hints were I'm going wrong or should be looking?

Cheers

Start by watching the Carbie (engine off and cleaner off so u can see)

Get someone to pull out the choke slowly and watch what happens

Normally 2 stages

Stage 1 the choke lever via a adjustment screw on a cam, opens the throttle a little

Stage 2 the throttle opens even more but a lever also should move the mixture jet (where the hose connects at the bottom at right angle) of the Carbie down (making the mixture extra rich)

It sounds like you are not getting to stage 2.

Have a look in your handbook there is some info there I think re Carbie settings.

I think it's a little more complex on a auto because there is also a kickdown lever system but I can't remember how that makes things different.

Usually if an Su is set up correctly you pull the choke right out (stage 2) Turn the key (no foot needed on throttle). As soon as engine starts push in to half way (Stage 1)

Just tried that Phil and not sure what what was supposed to move !? - the nozzle head at the bottom of the carby doesn't appear to move up and down as such more like a wiggle sideways!

should it clearly move up and down? is it likely to be gunked out and stuck do ya think?? Will I break it if I manually lift it up and down myself??

cheers again

and sorry Mr Orange, I don't know what you mean there - if it's for an electronic dizzy, I had one installed October last year

yes, it should move up and down 8-10mm - when you pull the choke out, the linkage pushes it down.

Sounds like you need to get in there with your fingers and push and pull things to see whats what and where it goes. You won't break anything

The jet is probably stuck. They can do that when the car is parked for a few months and the petrol turns to varnish.

with a HUGE thanks to to Phil B on here, who gave up his Sunday arvo to go thru a fix it lesson on the SU carby for me. I now have a choke that works!

I don't think it ever did as there was a slight bend in the bottom jet rod stopping it from moving up and down. He loaned me a new one and it fired up with gutso at 5.30 this morning ha ha!!

Onya Phil ! most appreciated and another lesson learned about Minis for me

No Problem Steve.

Actually we both learned something. Steves carbie had a "capstat" or "waxstat" thermostat at the base of his jet which I had never seen. It alters the mixture slightly depending on under bonnet temperature.

Did SU's/cars here in Aust ever have that?

Never seen a waxtat stock on an Oz Mini. Probably were used on other UK motors eg Range Rover etc.
