ITs illegal to buy(well for the seller to sell) and its illegal to install second hand belts. They have to be new.

that must be a southener thang.....it's legal in NSW.

Technically, it's illegal. Pick 'n Payless said as much when we asked.

on the contrary.....they were the ones that told me it wasn't illegal. They said it will be soon though.....

even if it is legal its just plain STUPID to fit second hand belts.

unless you have a second hand brain ......

That's a bit harsh, did you replace the belts in your mini when you bought it or did you buy your mini brand new? If not how do you know that you don't have a second hand brain?

nope did not replace them YET but its on the list of many things to do, but when i do they will be new, not second hand, just like all the new brake components, half of which have already gone in, a new laminated windscreen. I also do not drive this particular car every day, which reduces the risk in my view.

But at least it was registered and had a pink slip, so the REPCO non original belts at least passed the annual visual inspection. More than can be said for other states who whinge about it. the car was registered when i bought it, and there are no indications of accident damage, but as already stated the belts have already been replaced by PO.

i was simply trying to point out that second hand belts from a wreckers are not a bargain, not good value, just simply silly. i don't think thats harsh at all. it is just like when buying a helmet, buy a $100 helmet if you have a $100 brain. i would say the same to anyone who thought buying retreaded tyres for cars was good value, its just stupid, because unlike some truck tyres and aircraft tyres the car ones are not designed to be retreaded, but they still get sold because it is not illegal to do so. most of the guys here drive their car every day, most are on a budget, but you have to pick the right things to save money on.

and besides i plan to kill my brain cells with alcohol over the rest of my long life, not by spearing through the windscreen

The helmet thing although true to a point, if a $100 helmet meets the australian standards, it's going to do pretty much as good a job as a $900 helmet with all the trimmings, you mainly pay for the latest graphics, a washable liner and lighter/stronger materials, comfort and a bit better build quality....

Belts are cheap..but new ones..

Well the As1698 test for helmets is pretty pathetic really, all they do is drop a weight on the top and measure the acceleration on the inside. thats why those stupid (that word again) pudding bowl things that the hardley rideable drivers wear get passed. having slid along the road on the chin piece of my full face helmet, i would not wear an open face on a bike ever. dress for the slide not the ride!

 hehe, i have an opinion and i'm not afraid to use it

being a hardley driver, you would know the helmets i mean, not just an open face one but less on top of your head than the old leather thingies they used to have in racing prior to the 1950s - shudder

haha, that's cool..micks just a bit safety paranoid

I have a mate that rides around with a skullcap..that's just stupid ;)

I ride with an open-face most of the time though (I have a front shield that clips on..would be better than nothing in an accident but not much more).. I have a fullface as well...

If I ride the Honda it's fullface..harley openface...

My mum just came of at 120 with her openface...no problems..apart from her leg..which a 380Kg bike + touring gear landed on..that hurt..

I'm off for a 3 week ride around europe tommorow, pillion though..
