I had mine welded up by one of the guys at the dockyard who welds 30 year old aluminium structures in ships for a living (Mick's ship is one of them

). The machine shop then redrilled the plug hole with bit provided by Kev, and I tapped it out with his tap. Inserted the Kev special steel insert with loctite and it has not leaked since.
Sorry to say but that was a one off job for me, i doubt i could get another one welded up.
But the point is that you need to get someone who has the experience with old oily aluminium.
