If you really want to clean them, just use some brake cleaner/carby cleaner / paint thinners or whatever on a rag and some elbow grease. Or a wire brush or a whizzy wheel (gasket sander thingy).

Anything really, just make sure you blow the cylinders out good.

Thanks.

I've got a can of carby cleaner and was going to give that a go but want ed to see if there are any other clever solutions.

Well if you want to hear "smart" ways of cleaning them how bout some of these

- have engine running and spray water into the carb whilst revving so it doesn't stall.
- do the above but with brake fluid! (can't remember who told me that one but they reckon it works but makes a bit of smoke)
- foaming air intake cleaner works too, you can buy it as subaru upper engine cleaner, or nulon and threebond have their own version as well. Same idea as the above two but you could just spray it onto the pistons anyway.

Along the same lines as mad matts comments
( for reading NOT doing)

Supposedly ATF in fuel filter of a diesel 4WD cleans just about eveerything ( rumoured to be used by old school Army mechanics on landies)

Diesel trickled into the carby with engine running apparently work well.
Tried it a few times....Makes a ton of white smoke, watch it because
someones bound to call the fire brigade.
The car does seem to run noticeably better afterwards.
Also some guys do it before they pull the engine down.

Of course none of this advice is much use to the original poster.

I say don't clean them at all - they're not that grubby, and after running for 5 minutes they'll look like that again anyway

You reckon Simon?

I figured it was from the crappy situation the carby was in (before Matt worked his magic) and maybe the use of the lead replacement stuff.

I figured I'd clean it up and see what it was like when it ends up getting torn down again.

Anyway thanks again for the info.

I think between the carby cleaner and some gentle scraping with a plastic scraper I'll be fine.
