Can't see how it's much of a saving to put a car on club plates..... Seems to be more of a hassle than a saving to me.

Don't forget the Gerringong Street parade Ryan, that was on their calendar too..

I was talking to the plate registrar at the Christmas Picnic, because I thought I'd have to change lots of things on my car to get it onto the historic plates. He didn't have any issues with my car at all. He is a lot more relaxed than the last inspector... If you look at the MCCNSW link you'll see a mini in matte black with green stripes, no chrome on the front either (belongs to someone on here?), so they aren't worried about the right nuts and part no.s on everything like they might have been in the past

Hi.

I own the black Mini in question and apart from the paint it's a pretty much standard Mini K  . Clause 4.1 of the Club plate scheme reads as follows:-

- Colour of the car and engine can be any reasonable colour. However, no 'Kandy', metalflake or Chameleon paintwork will be accepted. Sub-frames and suspension components are to be dark colour. Discretion will be with the Historic Plate Inspector.

I have 3 (soon to be 4 Minis) on Historic plates with the MCCNSW. It's a wonderful scheme which allows me to keep multiple cars on the road at a reduced rego rate. As stated insurance is also reduced for historic rego'd cars.

There are more than enough events listed through the club which would allow me to use my cars every weekend if I wished. Clause 3.1 states :-
- Vehicles may be used to attend any event listed in the MCCNSW magazine, the MCCNSW website or the Council of Motor Clubs calendar.

Events of interest state wide are listed in the magazine along with the Minis in the Gong and Sydney Minis events. All the major ACT events are covered as well. You can even drive your Mini to Watto's GDO in Melbourne as a group of us did in 2012. :D

You can also be a member of multiple car clubs and use your club plated car on events listed with them as well.

As with anything this scheme works for some and not others.

Is this quote from the MCC or RMA website?

Thanks for clearing all of that up.

It seems that it has become a more realistic option for me compared to 4-5 years ago when I first enquired about the scheme.

The NSW rego for my Cooper S this year was $56 including $35 for the CTP. Even the comprehensive insurance is cheaper with Historic plates, $193 at NMRA V&V.

No offence intended but I think you could argue that if you're on the pension you can't afford two cars?

Anyone can have unlimited cars on historic plates, but not everyone gets free rego on their daily drive!

It is from MCCNSW club plate rules. It is entirely in the spirit of the conditional registration scheme. This has been MCCNSW policy for a long time and is intended to prevent conditional registration that is intended to help keep historic vehicles going being abused by people building street machines that are not in the spirit of the scheme. The scheme was almost dismantled altogether because of this kind of abuse but the CMC managed to convince the RTA (at the time) to restructure it to the more manageable format it is today.

MCCNSW do allow "period modifications" - so no Honda VTEC conversions, but things like Webers, deseaming etc that were done in the day would probably be OK. The current club registrar also encourages historic competition cars that would have been registered in their day, like rally cars, with their attendant modifications, to join the scheme.

I have previously had a car on the MCCNSW scheme and it was fantastic, but it turned out i wanted to use the car for more than just club events, so i switched back to full rego. My car was non-standard in many ways, but none would be considered outside the "period modifications" scope.

cheers
michael

Please be aware that you must have been a financial member of the MCCNSW for a minimum period of 12 months before being considered for the historic plate scheme.

This is a rule imposed by our club. Other motoring clubs may be different.

some clubs take 12 months to qualify
and need a RWC and need to keep it roadworthy otherwise club I duty bound to inform Vic roads
and must always be financial
is a great scheme .
also some of these internet type car clubs might be in for a surprise :) :)
