I can't see it being a real problem. The only thing here in WA I could see them pinning you for is a sharp solid object protruding past the body line greater than 50mm. They might have to be the spring loaded ones that flick back when you run over pedestrians... As for other states I don't know.

Cheers,
Keels.

What difference would it make being on the guard to being on the door? It still protrudes the same distance and is on the side of the car?

I'm not sure if they'd have a problem with it, but they do have a problem with scoops, emblems, gauges, anything really mounted to the bonnet/guards that sticks out. Their philosophy from the last time I spoke to someone about it (was looking at running air filters out the bonnet) is that if you run over someone, that person slides up the bonnet or over the guards and will catch on anything that protrudes greater than 50mm and tear that person open. While I understand this for things on the very front of the car (fishing rod holders, bonnet mascots/emblems) I don't see their reasoning when it moves further down the car. If you've been hit hard enough to be sliding over the bonnet I think you have bigger things to worry about than a bonnet scoop or gauge.

Look at things like the Jaguar emblem/mascot. Old style was solid mounted and I could see how that could cause someone some damage in an accident. Answer was to make the jaguar spring loaded so if you hit it, it moves around and shouldn't cause as much damage. Then they just moved to a badge (probably cost related more than anything).

As I say, I don't know if they'd have a problem, or what the rules are in other states. Inspectors will probably be cool with it, or they might not. I know I've been defected/questioned over silly things before, just depends on their mood :)

Cheers,
Keels.

Can you see the mirror from the drivers seat? Because in that photo it looks like the A pillar will be in the way.

Yea, they actually have quite good vision. Even though my seat is a long way back and really low. :D

Fender mirrors are popular on Japanese market cars - I'm pretty sure they had to be spring loaded for pedestrian safety.

Unless that's how the car was originally specified from the factory..

Yeah I think even early 70s door mirrors fitted to Bmc Leyland cars were spring loaded. Even any bonnet ornaments on cars became spring loaded around that time.

They don't interfere with the quarter window or the wind up window. I was picky about getting these ones just because of that. I like to "big rig" around town with windows down and quarters open... I find them easy enough to see out of, but really they are just there for legality.

Cheers,
Keels.

on the guards - wouldn't have it any other way, the visibility is fantastic and they look awesome....

the left one also saved my laptop from getting crushed one day when I accidentally left it on the roof. It slipped fowards and down the windscreen, the strap hooked on the mirror and kept it from landing right in front of the front wheel

They come up on eBay quite often. Search on Wibroc. I think there's one there at
the moment.

Hopefully if the mirrors are illegal, the front tyres sticking a mile out past the guards will distract them!

I was thinking of purchasing this style of clip on mirrors. My car has never had mirrors fitted. Does anyone know if they vibrate too much to actually see out of them properly?
