3. What internal performance mods can be made to ensure the van keeps up with traffic and can make it up hills? I was told to bore it slightly and put in a "sports" cam but is there anything else. I dont want to make it visually different to a standard 850 to maintain the cars originality so extractors, sports exhaust etc are out...

Any help is appreciated as normal..

I am not sure but I think I remember that you are able to put the heads off 998 and 1100 engines on the 850 block (I am not sure wether it requires pockets in the block  ) but this is an easy way of getting a headd that will breath well. Also head work on the 850s apparantly was pretty effective because there is quite a bit of restriction in there.

Vizard's yellow book has a bit on what you can do to rebuild 850's

If the van is otherwise quite original I would be tempted to put a 850 in it (there can't be too many 850 engines still in cars seems like everyonegets rid of them as soon as they can) Is this going to be a daily drive or to drive just occasionally on weekends etc :?:

Stocko 998 Mini head is the same as an 850. You want a 12G202 (1098) or a 12G295 (998 Cooper- 1098 Sprite etc).
Or, just port the hell out of the 850 one...
