Phil, that is commitment to the cause. Great effort.
Please, I'm not having a crack at carter or anyone else on here because, for all I know, he may have been well prepared for roadside problems except just the one thing that he needed on this occasion. Indeed, this could be a whole new thread but it does fit in with the topic.
Having been around these little cars for over twenty five years my experience is that, other than something major like a head gasket, dropped valve etc in which case the car is going home on a trailer, the problems that seem to strand people the most are electrical. Because of this, I've always carried a small tool box with me in which, besides basic tools, I carry a coil, plug, dizzy cap, rotor button, points, condenser, fuse, HT lead and regulator. These are supplemented by fan belt, tape and a bit of fuel hose. These items are not bulky and will generally get you out of trouble. My tool box is wrapped in a towel and sits on the floor behind the passenger seat.
I would be interested to hear what other members on here consider to be essential spares. Obviously there are things like fuel pumps etc but there is a limit to what you should carry because you don't want it to become too bulky.
cheers
I'll let the boys explain exactly what their theory was to what went wrong, but basically it appeared to involve the dissy, which I provided, and the coil.
They were well prepared with tools, knowledge and ability. as I said they had the new dissy and coil fitted in no time under very dark and difficult conditions.
You are right though, I threw my usual mini tool bag in the car but I know I am missing all sorts of essentials and last night made me rethink what tools and spares I carry too.
Problem is where do you stop. I've seen some carry so many spares and tools that I'm sure the extra strain of carrying them increases the likely hood of a breakdown.
Somewher on here there was a thread on what people carry.
