I think the chems in some of these kits are just electrolytes (i.e. salt solution) and are only slightly acidic, the actual metal comes from donar anodes.

Don't think there is anything much worst than what you would find under your laundry sink or in your workshop.

Exactly what I was thinking... but then I thought since these chemicals were so expensive they must have something we dont have at home... Cause expensive always means good!

The chemicals in these plating kits should last for years with the limited use they are intended for.
When it's spent, just keep it stored until there's a chemical cleanup in your area.

I still want a nickel kit, for nuts & bolts etc..... 8)

BTW we have an Otto bin at work full of caustic soda, used with a S/S anode & a big battery charger it's pretty good at converting rusty parts into good ones.

Possibly. But it's not the chemicals in the kits....it's the chemicals produced during the reaction that can be the problem.

I do a little bit of reverse electrolysis at home to strip rust and while I'm certainly no expert when it comes to chemistry I know there is a reason why even using stainless steel as an anode as opposed to normal mild steel is a no-no.....it makes the solution pretty damn toxic.

A little bit of info for you (USA-related but environmentally related to us nevertheless):
