Worst I've had was when I was buying a bike rack from somebody on gumtree. They had it advertised for $50. Rang them up, organised a time, all good. When I got there, I went to pay him and he said it was $60. I said the ad was $50, and he just said 'well it's $60 now.'

I just left. I would rather go without than finance a douche.

Maybe its just me boys. If I agreed to something I would stick to my word. Id be super pissed off with myself. I offered to transfer cash straight away then figure out pick up.

One day Ill find a 1275 for my cluby!!!

Oh FYI JimL "most likely buy it" is not a commitment in my book.

Steady on there guys...

I was selling a bike on gumtree a couple of months ago, I exchanged a few texts with a kid and he said he was pretty keen on buying it and gave me an offer that was ok. So he said he would come around that weeknd and 'most likely buy it'.
That arvo a guy called me who turned out to live only a few minutes away, came around with the full amount in cash and bought the bike. When I called the kid to tell him he got pi$$ed off that I 'sold it from under him'. What was I meant to do, tell the bloke "Sorry some kid said he is 'probably' going to buy it so its no longer for sale". Is that bad selling etiquette? I though it was ok but kinda see where the kid was coming from

The only thing I would have done differently is to say to the kid...well that's fine...but if I get a better offer sooner I will be selling. That would give anyone who was really serious (most likely is not a firm offer) the opening to say "well could you give me chance to make a different offer before you sell it?" or similar.

Buying and Selling is fraught with danger, be careful out there :D

The way I see it the first one you agree to has the priority. I've sold things online and if you agree on a price with someone you honour it until they pull out or wait too long (tell them what you expect, eg "I want payment with in so many days or I'll keep advertising the item"). I've had better offers after I've agreed to one already and I tell the 2nd offer the truth, "I've already agreed to a previous offer if it falls through you have next dibbs".

I live by the following;
Your word is the only thing every man has, rich or pour. If you don't honour yourself your not a worthwhile man.
