I have switched to protech coilovers in my mini and love it. Rides super nice and tight I can't fault them tbh. I prefer them over my cone setup. If you have to $$ go for it, just make sure you get a good set. I spoke with the guys at protech a bunch of times to make sure I was getting the right rates and lengths and am super happy. I was going to buy the spax kit cos I had spax dampers with my cones but after looking at loads of reviews, protechs came out on top by a long way. I didn't consider ohlins etc cos of price. Image

I didn't get the offset pins for the rear cos I had heard shocking stories of them snapping. This meant we had to make pretty big rear towers for the struts to sit in.

Thanks for posting this,

what did you do for added strength now that the suspension load is on the body rather than the sub frame/chassis? this is my only concern with the coil overs. . . its pushing me to lean towards the ruber cone or hydro spring replacements instead.

Thanks
Leroy

This might be a dumb question but are the minispares springs tapered? It might just be the pic but it looks like you have the larger diameter end up against the hi-lo and the narrow end against the subframe. Assuming it's not just the pic, mine came with instructions saying the spring fits in a way that replicates the old donuts eg- wide end into subframe, narrow into hi-lo which makes sense I guess.

Looks like there is an extra coil on mine, so you can see the taper a bit more easily.

Of course if the springs aren't tapered, just tell me to shut up :-) hehehe

Do you have some photos of the height your car sits at? its looking like all the coil setups (coilovers excluded) are going to sit way to high for my liking.

thanks

Chux, no the Minispares coils are not tapered. Yep your Minitec ones are longer and better for a road car in my opinion. More suspension travel and no need for the spacers I had to put behind mine. I bet yours don't fall out with the standard teardrop stops either.
Leroy, mine can be lowered down to the bump stops if I wanted, but as I drive on the road I prefer some movement in the suspension to soak up bumps.

Actually left it up to the engineer to sort that out. The engineer is a very well known mini guy here in NZ and has the lightest and fastest race mini so I trust his skills.

This is how he did the rear.

Cheers, so without the spacer it sits a about 20mm or so lower?

do you have a link to where you purchased them? and they are for Hydro or rubber cone sub frames?

Looks sturdy enough, Im no structural engineer though. also looks like it would require mods to standard fuel tanks though?

Thanks

Leroy, I wouldn't run these Red springs without a spacer it's like a 4 or 5 to one ratio (someone might know the exact amount) for the rear. So removing the 25mm spacer would lower it too far, the swing arm would be hitting the subframe.
I would just wind in the Hi-lo adjuster thread.
Btw if you want 20mm off the guard ride height, I would use the race grade coils, also cut the bump stops down, wouldn't recommend for a road car though :)
Www.minispares.com and search for coil springs. Cheers

Cheers,

It is for a road car, but a road car that really isnt a 'road car' the plan is for it to be just a little insane :D
recomended shocks to use with the red's or the race grade coils?

thanks
Leroy

Shipping costs good money but I have found that the savings outweigh the shipping costs if you are buying $$ of stuff, have a browse and fill a dummy shopping cart, they calculate shipping before you pay so you
can see for yourself.
Edit...I do buy locally unless there is a significant saving. Cheers

hmm I posted a reply before but it seems to have been lost.

here's a few pics of how my car sits, sorry they aren't very good quality and not the best angle. It can go way lower but it hits the guards because the wheels are too wide.

I use protech lowered shocks with mine. I was using standard height shocks but the springs would fall out when jacked up and the ride was floaty as. Much better now with the adjustable shocks.

Thanks chux,

do you know if that is the kit that minisport australia have now listed? the springs look the same. . . if so and if it can be lowerd a bit more than where you have it sitting may be the go I think.
linky: http://minisport.com.au/mini-coil-sprin ... rings-86mm

Thanks

Here are some pics mate, sorry I don't have exact sizes but you'll get the idea.

Thanks Richard.. Appreciate you taking the effort to get those pics.. Have a better idea of what needs to be done now! Much appreciated.. Cheers. Steve
