I'd do a compression test first.. a leaky head gasket is the #1 cause of your symptoms.

I know this may seem a little odd but is the fan blade on the correct way as this has been done before and coursed overheating.
Also the fan blade size? There is more than one common BMC fan.

The fan won't cause it to overheat. The fan will make a small difference to the overall cooling but it won't be the cause of major overheating.
