(1) If it's a bare shell start with the brake, fuel, battery, hydro lines that run under the floor. Then fit the assembled subframes (steering rack first for the front and don't forget the hand brake lines with the rear frame).
(2) Then once it's a rolling frame make it steer and stop. Pedal box, brake and clutch MC's, hand brake, steering column.
(3) Then your wiring loom, dash, lights, wiper motor, fuel tank, pump & filter. If you want you can finish the boot off now, mount the boot lid fit the battery (don't hook it up yet) and you have one section finished.
(4) Fit the interior, hood lining first, carpet, door cards, seatbelts & seats. Mount the doors and fit all the glass. Now the second section is finished.
(5) lastly is the engine, drop it in, install engine accessories, connect exhaust, carby and hook up fuel lines, radiator and hoses, connect battery cable and all engine wiring. Get it running before you fit the bonnet and grill. Be careful when first starting the engine, this is when you can have fuel, oil & coolant leaks, also keep an eye on electrics you don't want it to short out or catch fire, keep a fire extinguisher handy (or two, one big and one small) and have the battery easy to disconnect (no spark=no fire).
Easy peasy.

awesome thanks,

ive pretty well followed this, as the bare shell has the brake and hydro lines still attached. i did however forget the hand brake step, and am not sure how to mount the steering rack, maybe ill go jack up my other mini and take a look at it, though its a bit hard to get to right now 0_0

Thanks
Leroy.

Three important MUST dos (possibly unhelpful but meant to keep you light hearted in your noble quest)

a) get a set of instructions from ikea... any instructions will do

b) use a chinese... english... swedish translator to work out why part B does not interference greatly with Part C

c) hide the left over bits

Other question though, my steering rack is just chilling out not bolted in. . how do these bolt in? I'm either stupid or blind (or both!) and could not see any obvious mounting bolt holes on it? U-bolts or something is it?

The rack fits into U-shaped brackets that are welded to the floor with a U-bolt at either end of the rack holding it up against the floor. Nyloc nuts for the U-bolts are tightened from inside the car.

Note, the U-bolts are designed for the purpose and are not just common types as used for exhausts, etc. The U section is flattened so it sits snuggly against the rack tube.

Also, don't tighten the U-bolts fully until the steering column has been bolted to the spline on the steering rack pinion and aligned so there is no sideways pressure on the pinion or column spline.

Finally, installing the rack is not a trivial exercise if you want the steering system to operate safely as originally designed. The comments above are just a couple of pointers to answer your specific question. I strongly recommend you get someone you trust who has done this before to help. Or at least get a detailed instruction from a workshop manual and follow it precisely.

Steering and brakes are the two most important things to get absolutely right in a car like the Mini, with steering coming first in my view. If the hydraulics fail in the braking system you have a handbrake that can be used in an emergency. If the steering column detaches from the rack you have no alternative but watch the car go wherever it feels like going, so maintain the steering system well and install it properly.

This exploded parts diagram may help. You can see the U-bolts with the flattened section. Any of the Oz Mini parts places should be able to supply them.

P.S. See the last para I added after you replied above.

This is in the How To section of the forum. I suggest you spend half an hour going through all the How To topics as many questions you are asking have already been answered.

There are bolts, and then there are the correct bolts for the application. Don't just look at the size, also look at the mechanical properties.

Here's an example in case you don't know what I'm referring to. Nothing special about this reference, just the first site that came up in a Google search.

Cheers, I am aware that bolts aren't just bolts :) that's why the bolts in there now are just so the car is movable. only bolts that I really NEED right now are the correct subframe bolts. . the rest isn't so urgent at this stage. . .

thanks for all your help :)

Leroy.
