Englishman Jack Dewes established Westminster Carpets at Dandenong, Victoria in 1948-49. The company initially produced low priced rubber bonded carpet for the floors of motor cars, but quickly adopted for use in homes and offices. The manufacturing process produced carpet directly from carded wool, eliminating the spinning and weaving processes. Its 'Westminster' brand was a haircord floor covering initially made from 80% goat hair and 20% highland wool on a rubberised hessian backing, and produced in a large range of single colours. In 1954 the factory also released carpet tiles, 10 inches (25cm) square, in a similar colour range. By 1965, Westminster carpets were being produced in 26 different single colours on 40 inch wide rolls, and were being made from a combination of goats hair and man-made fibres like nylon and Evlan. The Dandenong plant closed in 1998, but production continued at the company’s Tottenham factory in Melbourne under the ownership of US giant, Shaw Industries.

Yes I chatted to a few carpet places about when looking for somthing close enough to make some matching mats to protect mine. In fact I had my eye in the eBay set for mats.

They also confirmed there was Westminster factory in Australia. The other aspect that causes confusion is that Westminster has become a general term used to describe the style or quality of carpet.

I would say the factory cut and trimmed the carpet themselves. The edging is the seat vinyl.

Well that just about answers all that........but I don't see any goats in that image!
How does one shear a goat anyway? Must be one of the most ornery creatures around. I imagine there would exist some pretty ornery shearers to match.

With the mats, I did manage to wrangle a carpet square from Tretford a while back. It sits here beside my computer as an especially irritating and prickly elbow rest. It not the kind of carpet one would roll around on at home. I imagine you can buy a meter off tretford in a similar colour.

I've put all my images in one spot into a thread in the How-To. Its not quite the right spot as it doesn't show one How-To make a carpet, but I felt it was a loss being stored away hidden on my hard drive.

I had wondered about getting the Tetford but unsure if they would only sell a small amount.

Does anyone know which of the Tretford "reds" is the closest match to the red BMC used?
