OK. I've been using XLD Classic for a while and very happy, but I've always wondered about the difference between XLD Premium and XLD Classic.

Interestingly the classic is not listed on their website, and if you use their site to search for recommendations for "Morris Mini", they recommend the Premium.

Whats the story?

Classic is an SG oil, which should mean it has more Zn compound in it than XLD premium (it's SM or later?) does.

http://drbritton.co.nz/xld-classic-20w- ... l-oil.html

I would not follow their recommended oil, go try the Castrol site for this if you want a laugh!

[edit] ps. The Blacktown store still has a few, I got 2 more just now for Lillee.

I went on the Valvoline website this morning and submitted the following question:

Quote:
Contact Reason: technical enquiry
Contact Area: Australia
Contact Method: email
Comments: Hi,

What is the difference between Valvoline XLD Classic 20w50 and Valvoline XLD Premium 20w50?

You dont seem to list Classic on your website, and I cant find much Info on the Premium.

I'm trying to find out what sort of additives are in the 2 so I can decide which would be best to use in my classic minis (1975) engine.

Thanks

Hi Matt,

XLD Classic is no longer in production. We stopped it early this year.
The XLD Premium has replaced the Classic, you can use the Premium, no worries at all.
The Premium is only a slight up grade of the old Classic.
The Classic was an API SG/CD, the Premium is API SJ/CF, meaning its backward compatible.
It still has the same zinc ( ZDDP ) as the Classic, which is what you need. Its still a full mineral oil.
The upgrade of the Classic to the Premium was to make it compatible with more naturally aspirated petrol and diesel motors.
Your Mini will love you for it.
You can still find SG sped'd 20W50 oils still at most Supermarkets, IGA, COLES, WOOLIES, in their home
brand labels if you really want to have an SG.
These oils are of the same quality as the Classic.
If you want clarification you can call me on the toll free number below.
I use the Premium in our Moke and she loves it!!!!

Thanks for sharing that. I had a gut feeling this might be the case when the classic was gone from the website.

Well done for asking the question , a fairly confident answer to it as well , should put some minds to rest as to what to use in their classic cars .

If i didn't have 8 bottles of Castrol Edge in the shed , i'd give the Valvoline a try .

Not really they have 5 litres of xld classic at that price sometimes or $11.99

Minis take 5 litres of oil if you change the filter every oil change

Works out to be $20 for oil with that stuff cause you need 2 bottles

Supercheap have that stuff $10.99 for a litre bottle and $29.00 for 5 litres on there site so its cheap for now

I wont be getting none ive got 8 bottles of the 5 litre xld classic
