I get by with a recond 3 core Oz radiator, MiniMatic fresh air heater, and original 16 blade steel fan. Thermostat is 82C. It never gets hot, even in 42C heat. And it has ~125HP at the crank.

Awesome doc, how can I tell if mine is a decent oz made one or a less efficient one? They all look the same to me! (Besides alloy ones obviously :P )

Oz Mini ones from 1965? on are all 3 core and 16 gills/fins per inch.

Thanks for the info Doc, I don't know if this picture will shed ANY light on how many fins per inch my rad is but I may as well try - save trying to get a tape measure behind the fan to measure haha. It's definitely 3 core.

Looks like a 3 core UK one maybe? Fins don't look right for an Oz rad.
Give us a pic of the top tank...

It did get fully re-cored earlier this year, so I'm not sure if that would explain the different fins?. I hope you didn't mean inside the top tank, all you can see is green coolant haha

Tank looks more like Oz than UK...

Could it have been re-cored with less efficient UK rad cores?

EDIT:

I was just looking on minisport, and this one appears to have the same fins as mine, and looks identical? are the 'zig zag' type looking fins better than the straight across ones?

http://minisport.com.au/radiatora-new-3 ... re-76-sale

Sooo I might need a better one?

That is a UK 3 core, they are a bit flimsy. Mine broke the side bracket to top in less than a month.
Also the finning is less than the Oz original.
I had one on a 1293 in Barney (59.4HP ATW) and it was marginal. I sold it and fitted a UK super 2 core from Karcraft. These are pretty good.
Alloy Chinese ones? I dunno- never used one.

Jeez that's not too good, did it ever heat up a bit on the hills or traffic with the UK one? One thing I noticed about that Minisport one is that it takes a short neck cap - while mine takes a long neck cap, not sure if that makes any difference

If it comes to pass and I get a new one, I'd go with that super cool 2 core - seems pretty awesome

The UK 3 core ran hotter in traffic, and on the freeway. Didn't boil, but was too hot for my liking. The 2 core was fine.

3 core is probably OK for small bore motors. I sold to a guy with a 998.

Thanks for that doc, sounds similar to mine - it's never boiled but gets hot sitting in traffic ect. Think a super 2 core is the direction I'll head. Might get one as a nice 21st birthday pressie in just over a month :D

I have one of the Chinese alloy radiators and I am very happy with it. It's about to do its 3rd summer and is still going strong. I have an expansion tank on the drivers side of the engine bay and have never had to add a drop of coolent in use. First summer was with the 998 and second summer with the 1310. Both engines have no bypass hose or heater, but have a thermostat with a few small holes drilled around the edge to allow for coolent flow when thermostat is closed. Both engines sat between 80 and 85 degrees, even here in Canberra on a 43 degree day sitting at the lights, or up a long hill. I did get the extra wide alloy radiator that did require a small amount of modification to the fan shroud. I run the standard yellow plastic fan.

Thanks Mini0998,
At the moment mine is hitting 95+ on hills and in traffic - so anything will be better than my current set up it seems. As you said you are in Canberra - are you going to the Terribly British Day this December? A couple of us including myself from the gong are going to head up for the weekend.

Cheers
James
