I've always liked Garratt locos.
If you look at the scale model on display in the Sydney PowerHouse Museum, I made all the side rods, during my apprenticeship. They are duralium (aka duralumin).
This is an aluminium alloy with 4% copper and 0.5-1.0% magnesium.
