I would have thought that the letters YJBAV4R would have been stamped in the area as well - mine is.
I have two vans of this era on the register, YJBAV4R 1639 and 2276 which places yours in the middle. 2276 is listed as a June 69 build.

Hope this helps

You could try locating Steve O'Malley who ran Brickworx Racing in Adelaide many years ago as he may remember the car. They sold and serviced classic Minis, then moved on to BMW MINI's. Following details of the website are from the Wayback Machine copy. If no luck someone on here may know how to contact Steve now.

thanks Guys

Spoke with Steve yesterday but he didn't recall the car at all... funny i googled brickworx and got his mobile off that same page and he still has the same number..

I double checked on the radiator shroud and there is definitely no other numbers or letters just the 18** number.. appreciate your help, now just need to find some original colours from that period so i can paint it back to something original... there was a pale green colour i liked ...

David

It would be Willow Green if you are looking at 1969 or Malmo Green if you were thinking of 67/68

in sa you can ring 131084, give them the number plate and they will tell you if its stolen or previously written off ( i do this before buying any car ). If it has had rego in sa before and you have the number plates you don't actually need to go in for an inspection, as long as it has clear title and is currently not registered you can walk into any rego dept, fill in the paper work , declare its value and re register in your name you don't need any paper work signed from the previous owners, just need to have the last registered number plates... I've done this on previous cars and bikes...

What year is your van?

i don't know a year but has 7887 stamped in fire wall near center spedo hole and has the two piece aussie van floor
on ezy reg site using the last rego no the car has clean title and is ready to go but before i bought it i checked in person also because of no id tags .
they said it was fine then now the story has changed and my case has been handed over to david gunner the boss of vehicle standards at regency.
they claimed it was stolen even with the 15 years of history i supplied and a stat dec from previous owner and a dealers book no and precept of purchase .
I am 33 have only had 1 speeding fine when i was 18 i work have never been arrested but they have it in for me i have never raised my voice or caused a scene in there office ether as much as i want to
i just think they dont older cars on the road anymore

Sometimes when it comes to bureaucracy gone mad you wonder if you have to resort to this http://minisport.com.au/mini-british-motor-corporation-id-replacement-plate ?

I think Paulg is in the position now where they would have noted it on the system and as much as i hate to say it might be in trouble, sounds like regency park have already decided they won't pass it no matter what..

i cringe thinking this could happen to me too...

@ Paulg,
They are public servants, you are the public.
I would bounce in there and create a fuss, let them PROVE it was stolen.
Show where listed on the stolen register, or else it ain't. If it ain't stolen, and they are giving you grief, I'd complain to the Police..
