I agree with all the sentiments expressed so far. A real bugger.

I guess a new Mini is now on top of your Christmas wish list. I hoped things go OK for the New Year.

Watto.

Hey fellas. Thanks for the kind words. The fire did start in the rear and I was insured with Shannons (thank god). I should have salvage rights so i'll be pinching the mags and the engine but the shell is definitely a binner. Hopefully my next mini isn't another BBQ

Bet you're spewing, do you think it might have been the battery shorting, I've seen that happen before. You hit wrong bump or brake hard/hit something, and if the battery isn't in right, the positive touches.

Happened to a friend of mine's van, just after a $20K rebuild/restore. A wire on the battery terminal shorted somehow and set fire to the seat cover. Then it all went up. He had to stand and watch it burn...

[edit] Where they put that van battery is a disaster spot, IMO.
If I was rebuilding a van, I'd put the battery into a marine battery box, securely bolted down above where it original was.

I had to wrench off a jack that had welded itself across the terminals...after the cardboard cover got dislodged...battery covers are really important

just goes to show that $7 battery clamps are a good investment, it is unfortunate for some unlucky ones.
main thing no one got poked in the eye,

why is there a photo of my bbq trailer in this topic ?
if it is referring to a sad end of a mini I am sorry to say that it was the only
salvageable bit of the car and there is a lot of rusty bits still inside that you cant see .
