I've made an extension to the exhaust mounted innovate motorsport sniffer with a piece of copper, so it does idle readings well now.

It was even worth opening the page for a nice picture, cheers danny

My af meter goes really rich during acceleration. It only leans out as the load on the engine decreases. Thinner oil would cause the dashpot to rise sooner this would make it richer? I might buy a super lean needle and machine it to suit.

Thinner oil will make the piston rise faster = less air velocity = leaner.
Opposite to what you would think.
As said before I thought Barney (twin HS4s) was going lean on acceleration with ATF in, but was actually getting too rich. So in summer I used to run with NO oil in it.

I've never done a turboed car, but I think most run around 10 or 11 at full noise so they don't melt things.
Ask GR, or someone with a hair dryer or huffer fitted, like Michael B.

ive tried different needles, leaner ones.

ive tried thinner oil

ive tried weaker springs

ive adjusted timing

what ever do as soon as I pull off idle it richens up to about 10-1....

the needle and main jet are new.. its got me stuffed. fuels getting past the main jet somehow.

I guess i will just replace the needle and seat....

for the life of me i cant get it to lean up ....

any ideas ?

Right main jet? A friend bought a 1098 van with an HS4 on it. Some `carby expert' had fitted an HS6 jet, that's .100" not .090". Looks much the same externally.
Rich as. It ran like a dog until we sorted it.

i checked the main jet with one that I had here it was a 1 3/4. it is definitely smaller.

i've just got a facet type fuel pump. with the needle out and the fuel pump on there is no fuel pouring out.

I have made a bit of progress

I took about 10' of timing out of it and put a needle i found in the bottom of a cupboard in it. ive managed to get the acceleration to around 13 - 1. As the engine starts to rev out it dies and goes really lean...

ive managed to make a change I guess.

Im currently using dashpot oil and a red spring.... i might order some new needles...

now the timings changed it runs like a bit of a pig though.....

Can anyone recommend a dyno here in SA that talks SU ?

Haha, I did that too. Bought a new jet, and it was wrong - it was one for the mirrored carb. But my brother had some spares - they looked just right! Put it on, started tuning it up, and realised I had the fuel nut all the way it and it was still running rich!

I'm beginning to think that the reason my engine is running rich at high load/rpm is because it is to small. The air velocity it's too high and it's pulling to hard on the jet.

That would explain why no amount of spring weakening, dash pot oil thinning will get the piston to rise quick enough to keep it roughly stociometric ....

I'm at a loss......

It's funny .. I got rid of the hs6 because I felt it was too big.... Turns out it may have been ok....
