My car is stamped 26786 on the firewall - nothing on the shroud. I can't remember is the rad shroud is 500 more or 500 less?

I took mine to the Netherlands for the three years i lived there, but i never drove it on the road as it is for track use only.

It was shipped from AUS to NL in a 40ft container with the furniture. I had to pay the difference between a 20ft and 40ft which was $1700 including insurance.

On the way back it was shipped in a separate container (the NL shipping agent was not nearly as accommodating) and it cost $3000.

I put the cost differences down to the fact that most containers leave Australia empty, so there is not much market for full ones going out. On the other hand every container that comes to Australia is full, meaning there is high demand for slots on the few ships that come here (relative to other routes).

Be aware that insurance costs alone for other countries could prohibit you from doing it. I doubt there are many accomodating policies for Australian registered cars driving in other countries. Travel insurance for USA is ridiculous due to the incredible medical costs there, so i can't imagine the premium for driving.

When importing to the EU, you will need some documentation that you will not be registering the car there and taking it out again because they have exhorbitant duties on cars manufactured outside the EU. I bnicho is right and this is not the Carnet de Passage, there will be other documentation required.

I don't know what alternative documentation the USA requires, but there will be something.

The Australian process for re-importing an Australian car is fairly simple. The car must NOT have been modified whilst overseas. And you will need the import permission documents arranged before you ship the car back, it does not have to be before you leave, however that may be easier if it is only a few months you are away.

You WILL be hit with a $600-700 charge to have your car "steam cleaned" for quarantine purposes no matter how clean your car is when it arrives. The import websites always say you may be charged for this, but I do not know of anyone who has ever not had this done. I saw absolutely no evidence of steam cleaning of my car despite having to pay the money.

cheers
michael

Me neither! My Corona still had Japanese cigarettes in the ash tray when it arrived in Melbourne. So customs did not look very hard!

JP, add 500 to the firewall number. And there will be a number on the rad shroud, its just buried under the paint. The only thing Deluxe with my car are the badges. I absolutely detest the concept of putting Cooper S badges etc on the car. Mine is way superior to any Cooper S that came out of the factory anyway.....
My car is a 67 Deluxe albeit a bit souped up haha!

Unfortunately not. At some stage a PO bolted a replacement shroud to the car so there is no numbers at all which sucks. May I ask what number is on your firewall? I think mine must be a little earlier than yours haha.
I completely agree with you! Mine still has the Deluxe badging on it cause well - that's still what it is.

American roads are bumpy, straight and boring, plus they're terrible drivers.

Check out Hertz, you can have your choice of V8 Camaro, Mustang, Challenger or Corvette for not very much, fuel is cheap and you'll probably have more fun and be safer. We hired a 5.0 Mustang and Camaro when we were there and many skids were had.

you could probably buy one and nearly get you money back when you leave , or sell it cheaper but probably still less than a rent a car.

http://www.minimania.com/cars4Sale/1261 ... Mini_Sedan

or rent new mini from LA Airport (bit easier on the highway driving)
