the bottom brackets you can see there have the damper waaay out over the balljoint. No doubt that's to give the spring clearance away from the crossmember, but there must be some extra clearance in it somewhere

I've worked on a mini which has coilovers, not sure of brand though, probably an older setup. Runs on standard 10" steel rims with drum brakes with the built in spacer.

So probably depends all on the design of the shock etc.

Also the top arm has been moved up in the subframe to give better geometry. Nothing what so ever touches under any side loading at this height. Even when the car is lower the only thing that touches is the tire to front arch which I can trim anyway. I also have had no issues with ball joints what so ever and the car is constantly checked. So I'm completely confident in the handling, stopping and clearances of my car.
