so is it safe to just pull on the shaft in my pic and that is what will come out? there is no seals or anything or any chance of breaking anything?

If you pull on it you will get the bit in Kevs pic and a steel bush that holds it in place.

The only thing that you could brake is a fingernail or skin on a knuckle.

ok. i spent all afternoon pulling at this thing and it does not want to come out.

i can see the end bit on this but then it has some 'stripes' around it. it wont come any further than these 'bands'. Image
sorry to be annoying but is there anything else that could be holding it in place?

Probably got sludge in the hole. The bush is a pretty neat fit. You might have to grab the spindle with some vicegrips, then lever under those with a screwdriver or spanner.
Spraying a little degreaser in there might help, too.

Might help to pull the bottom hose off, if you can undo the clamp...

took the actual cover off after being told that i could lever it. i cant seem to do that either.

good news. i found the problem. the nylon gear is no longer attached to the shaft thus making the gear spin but not the shaft

try driiling a hole through the thread, one side to the other put wire through it and twist that way or put shaft through it and thread that way! Just an idea! :D

Well now you've got the rad out and one side all off, it wouldn't take much to lift out the motor & pull the whole speedo drive housing off.
Then it might be easiest to just bung another complete S/H one on.

Ok i see you have removed the main spindle which is the hole under the cog. That is the drive off the end off the box, this connects to the cog you trying to get out. The tw half cirles as you call them are actaull one complete bush. This should turn easily in the hole, and if it doesn't it is where you problem is. It will come out along with the cog. Do you have a haynes manual? there is a good exploded diagram of all this in there.

As Kev says, your so close to having the motor out, it will turn this job into a two minute thing. You have done well to get this far, but just hoist it up and you will have plenty of space and it will be off in a jiffy. If you can't get the thing to budge and don't want the engine out. i would sugggest you take the gearbox side cover off altogether, you can see what your doing and you can replace all the gaskets. Something is definatly amiss if the bush isnt coming out.

Cheers

Aaron
