If you said this to any engine builder, or even mechanic, painter, carpenter etc etc etc. You will be shuffled back on the priority list. Other people that have more urgent or pressing needs, i.e., the car needs to be running to get them to work, or they have a race meeting or they are getting married and need it for said wedding will mean that when you say the above, the service provider will go," well I can push that bloke back because he told me he does't need it for at least 6-12 months"

What did you expect to happen? :?

Cheers
Aaron

Aaron I hadn't actually said what I told him. How do you know I didn't say it's going in stretch mini limo for a wedding?

I was trying to be accommodating. I never gave him a timeframe but I did say that I was still pulling the car apart. But I was first told one or two months easy, then before christmas, then definitely not before christmas and so on. I called a few times to see how it was going. When I'm told something I tend to expect that what I hear is reasonably the truth and am not being told what I want to hear. If they say before christmas then I expect that's a reasonable attempt at an estimate.

Did you send your engine to Melbourne perchance?

Funny, I was going to ask the same question. I wonder if we were thinking along similar lines...

Anyhoo, I used Bob Rowntree in Picton south of Sydney. He's got a good name. He does the things he promises to do and he seems a guy of very strong character. Yes it did take a while, but he was honest about time frames. Would use again.

I think this topic has been hijacked, but I think as a rule what you publish online (i.e. anything you might say in a forum, Facebook etc) is in the public domain and hence you could be taken to court if you say anything defamatory against someone, because you are publishing this. If you're just speaking to your mates that's not publishing and you can say what you want. Opinion is different to defamation and you're entitled to the former but you might need to prove it's not defamation in court. Perhaps there could be a disclaimer somewhere when you sign up that 'your comments are those of you alone and are not necessarily those of the moderator' etc. i.e. obtain legal advice as to how to mitigate this risk.

jon i do hope you get someone you are going to be confident with( whether the current one or another). This could be redundant but normally i would suggest the whole process is negotiated with lots of communication with the builder/machine shop... ( sorry if this has been done, but i couldn't tell from your first few posts.) 100-110 hp from a 998 0r 1100 is going to require a good selection of matched parts, including talks about the cam, final drive ratio, CR etc and then some good cooling to keep it all working as it should . So head work, matched to a good inlet manifold and carb, and a reasonable exhaust also come into the consideration .. (now becoming a money pit) , the process of working out what you are keeping, ( like conrods after they are weighed and balanced) what is new eg brand of piston and ringpack , valve types etc usually all need to be envisioned ( you can make a verb out of anything these days) so both the owner and the builder know what is what and whose responsibility ordering is etc..... If you have done this ... phew... if not , then ????

and for me, the comment ......lots of fast road 1275s wouldn't be hitting 100 bananas/hp/ ponies etc

Thanks FNQ. I agree it's asking a bit much to get 100-110 from something smaller than a 1275.
I did not have a huge discussion about the add-ons (carburettor/manifold etc) as was going to leave that til later. For me it was to get the engine itself right.

Jonnoh, if you do pull the pin and get the work done locally, I can highly recommend Jason at Dave Armstrong Motors, Salisbury South. He has built many engines for me over the years including for my Group N car. Always powerful and ultra reliable. Jason has raced minis for 25 years, and has inherited Dave's knowledge of Minis accumulated since they began....

There was a case in Australia recently where someone was sued for a comment made on their own blog website. The claim was knocked back by the judge, as it was reasonably plain to the reader that the person writing the remark was making a simple statement of his own experiences on a website which was also easily identifiable as being composed of mostly subjective material. This doesn't discount the information's value, a chorus of similar experiences adds strength.

I think the outcome of this case would mirror what happens on here, but Ausmini's opposition to negative comments is more based around community values. We are a small community. We all know one another. Most people who do not know each other will be only one degree of seperation away. We have a pretty decent system of Fair Trade and arbitration provided by the ACCC. There is always two sides to a story, and I think its better that this is worked out between the buyer and seller.

You can always post your views on productreview.com.au then provide a link. That site is all about outing or praising products and service providers and their products. No punches pulled on that site.

yeah I wondered about product / service reviews. Nearly every retailer has them on their own websites.
