In laymans terms, tapered bearings are squished together by the CV (on the inner side of the hub) and by the drive flange (on the outer, hub nut side of the hub).

The bearings themselves consist of two identical outer tapered races that live inside the hub itself and two innner tapered races in the centre. One set of outer race and inner race is on the CV side, the other set is in the flange side. In between these two outer and inner races there is a steel spacer. When the CV hub nut is done up tight, the inner and outer set of bearings press up against each other. If the spacer is too thin then the bearings are crushed up too tight and it won't spin. If the spacer is too thick then they don't squish up against each other enough and are too loose and therefor the outer races that live in the hub can spin and wear out the hub.

You want perfect spacer not too tight and not too loose.

Chong you got that back to front. If the inner spacer is too thick, the assembly is loose. And vice versa.
Read my thread in the how-to forum.

Nope that's just an inner seal spacer. Not needed as long as you don't push seal too far in.
Tapered roller front bearings, both Timken and copies have a steel tube spacer IN the kit. This goes between the bearings. It is selected to give the right preload with a NEW hub. But problems can arise with 50 year old hubs if the bearings have ever spun and worn the centre web.

Sorry again about the hijack but I reckon it is relevant to the topic and some good learning.

Thanks for this info Doc. For years I have had issues with the driver's side wheel bearings/hub/flange area. On my rebuild, I found this springy spacer (as opposed to the normal spacer) inside the hub with the cone next, then the bearing, then the seal. I knew it didn't look right so I'm glad this topic came up. Always had trouble with the cv joint not coming out far enough for the castellated nut. Obviously if I swap these around, it should come good. And recheck the passenger side for good measure.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, If I take the hub out will that effect my wheel alignment ?
Does anyone have a blow up exploded view of the bearing setup.
