More CRAP

Group Nb $30k plus and still spending!!!!!

the full quote was.....

No racing is cheap, but having said that, Minis are probably one of the cheapest, great fuel consumption even when hotted up and weeny little tyres that are relatively cheap....(sort of tongue in cheek :D )

Hey TK....did you just truck on by the part where I was comparing running a Mini to say an EH?....or XY!!!...

Its all relative....a friend who runs a Falcon spends about $20K just on an engine.....

my basher is cheap motorsport because

1. i have it
2. i only do supersprints, khanacross (yet to start one) and motorkhanas
3. i have not built a ridiculously expensive engine
4. i do not expect to win anything, only have fun and learn how to drive properly
5. i work on it myself

so there
:P

It is possible to do cheap motorsport in a mini - just as Mick said Motorkhana and Khanacross etc, and I hate to agree with willy, but Supersprints as well. Group N would be ridiculously expensive in my book - for us regular people anyway, but good luck to anyone who can afford it - keep it going for our entertainment!!

I'm struggling to find the balance at the moment - desperate to get into racing, but trying not to spend too much! Very hard I can tell you

Group N has got totally out of control cost wise, it is not a cheap form of motorsport and the chances of being a winner in the class will cost you a fortune, just how much money has Greg Malure and Co spent on thier cars to be able to be the fastest mini, and yet he will never catch the fastest Falcons, Torana's, Mustangs and Comaroes and stuff. Cheap and motorsport should never be seen in the same sentence, more affordable yes but cheap never. Go carts are not cheap either, my nephew has just purchased a new cart and engine and there is not much change out of $7000 and he still has to run it and buy tyres and engine rebuild for the year, and again if you want to run at the front it means new tyres every meeting and engine rebuilds every 4 meetings. Khana's, hillclimbs and supersprints are the way to get started, you don't have the costs of all the cams required stuff like driving suits and $420 licences and the latest safety gear like roll cages and the like, you actually compete against yourself mainly but they have classes so you can compete against similar capacity and style vehicles but the most important thing is you get to see how you improve your self

Hi guys,

For those that want a cheaper form of motorsport, why not look at Regularity Trials with the HSRCA ? and GEAR, and MG Racing ? for those of us in NSW anyway. (Equivalents in other states). Its not racing, you nominate a time you think you can do repeatedly, then go out and try to do it (in traffic its bloody hard!).

This way you can compete at a "big" race meeting on a more cost efficient basis. The constraint in NSW is that your car must qualify for one of the other categories (Group N, S etc). VIC run regularity for Group S only which sucks.

What are the costs (assuming you have a car)???

L2S license - $85
Entry Fee for a meeting - $240 approx
plus club membership.

In terms of car speed, you dont have to have a Group N sort of quick car. But you can. At Eastern Creek last time out, the quickest Regularity car was posting times that would have seen him mid grid for the Group Nb race or the back half of the grid for Nc. The slowest car there was doing 2.37's, and was basically a stock road car. Many of my friends who compete, five to the circuit, put the numbers on, compete, then drive home..

This is a perfect category for people wanting to compete, but not with the big speeds and budgets of the top categories. While its not technically racing, there are plenty of people out there running similar times, and who are keen to put down as competitive times as possible (and who like their cars in one piece as much as you do!). So its a fun way to go racing.

There was a clubby (blue) and me at the last E Creek meet flying the Mini flag. Would be great to get some more Mini's out there.

Cheers

TW

Excellent suggestion Troy....

Are you sure Troy?...the Victorian scene is diverse in its organisation...for example the MGCC might run an Historic Meeting at Sandown and the Austin Seven Club does Winton. Then there is the Mini Car Club (Yayyyy!!) running Philillip Island Historics, Matthew Ronke running other meetings at Winton etc ..I don't think you can say there is a blanket ban on Tin Tops doing regularity in the State of Victoria (if you know what I mean)

What are the costs (assuming you have a car)???

True...the costs in Nc (the big boys) and the breakaway group at...

http://www.historictouringcars.com.au/c ... ahtca.html

are indeed substantial as my Feral mate pointed out...but...Nb Minis are basically just road cars with a cage, a racing history and a few other safety mods like expensive driving suits and helmets etc. This category is affordable for the average Joe!!!

This is a perfect category for people wanting to compete, but not with the big speeds and budgets of the top categories. There is also a line of thinking that to do well at regularity... you should nominate a near to fastest time and just go for it....

Hey Troy...I was there flying all sorts of flags including a nice big Red Coloured one

Cheers, Mick :D

were you waving that red flag at me ?? hope not cos I didnt see it! ha ha ha.

You were on the flag point just coming out of turn 2 ? i didnt get that corner right once all weekend I reckon !

I like the idea of nominating a lap time a second quicker than you think you can go..... then push like crazy to get it. There have been alleged reports of some people adjusting their buddy's nominated time (to a much slower time..) so when they arrive on the grid, they are way down the back! Its a lot of fun.

The data on VHRR Regularity is accurate. I competed down there last year in my older race car - a Williams Special, based on a MkIv Bolwell. In entering the meet, the committee rang me and informed me of the "group S only" rule. I negotiated my way in. Strangely enough that car was a Group M sports car on any other day... but a Group S car for that meeting!

im sure if you walked to every shop in your local area and asked them to give you some money every year for a block of your car that they could advertise on youd get a bit of money to pay some stuff off, if your only running small events its not gunna come to the huge cost full time curcuit racing does.

My "cheap" choice would be an 80's Toyota Sprinter. Many larger engines can fit, they are fairly lightweight, rear wheel drive, and Toyota parts are very easy to come by.

Have you tried to buy a 80's sprinter lately......cheap does not come into the equation

...............But the last of the 80's rear wheel Carollas runs the same wheel base and mounts as the Sprinter's and I have a couple of mates working on limited budgets to make their cars into track cars.
They have put in jap big Hp motors, celica gearboxes and Sprinter rear ends in them, and one of them has managed to lighten his car (safely) to under 700Kg

Not too expensive.....but no door to door racing in these

Adelaide has quite a few... less than 3 grand.... and we have many many many Jap imoprters here with shelves covered in spare parts.

This country town has its advantages.....

Sounds like what you guys need is a cheap small capacity Mini racing series!

Oh hang on there was one a few years ago and that was apparently ruined by LARGE BUDGETS!

Should hit the track fresh next year....all goes well :o
