i may be wrong but have been told the rover roof is longer as it is the Mk 5 body which we never got into production in Australia. we only had the Mk 1.
happy to be corrected. we all need to learn. :)

Hi, just thought I'd drop on in! I'm no expert However I'm doing a similar job on my mini as well. Admittedly I have it a bit easier as I have a full roof cut off another car thats the same as the car I'm restoring.
Here is how I plan to do it

1. get a wire brush wheel attachment for your drill and strip all the paint and rust out from inside the roof gutter. This should expose the spotwelds.
2. get a proper Spotweld drillbit (8mm I think) and drill out the spot welds.
3. gently pry the roof panel out

reapeat the process again on your other roof.

fitting
1. Carry out any other repairs on the car while the lid is off if need be. also prep area with weld through primer.
2. sit roof on car position it in place with clamps
3. Once happy with roof positioning and its clamped in place, fire up the welding machine ( I'm using a little mig welder) and plug weld the spots you drilled out. Note: start in one area and then go to the opposing side directly from where you laid your first weld this will prevent distorion of the roof panel. continue this process until completed.
4. Have a cold beer

I hope this makes sense.
Now I will just say here that I'm uncertain of the legalities around this for where you are. I'm over the ditch (NZ) so things are different here.
Also NZ minis are Identical to the Pomgolian counterparts so assembly methods from factory may differ from the aussie assembled models
other more clued up fellas on this great forum could clarify this.

looks like about 6 hours to repair I have repaired much worse. I like to glue on a roof skin, which takes about 4 hours.

Thanks guys. Plenty of options. I think if I can find a skin that will fit that would be my first option otherwise pay someone to beat it into submission. Thanks for all the tips very helpful.

After replacing my roof (cutting through the external pillars and unstitching the internal A & B ones then cut through the C pillars with a patch behind the weld for strength ) if you can just repace the turrant with a new panel i think thats the way to go .
Theres a lot of work cutting of a roof.

I watched a beater replace a roof once
1) cut existing roof off close to the gutters , once the middle was out trim it back as much as possible ,
didn't remove the welded section in the gutter , clean up gutter

2) donor roof cut off at pillars upside down on frames
cut off excess right under the gutter ,
with a flappy disc carefully remove the gutter from the roof panel

3) with the gutter on the car cleaned , smoothed and primed and the donor panel cleaned and primed
spread body glue in the gutter and drop the donor roof on and clamp it down

(if you use a new roof panel forget about step 2 )

upside - no welding , no aligning pillars

downside - three panel thick instead of two , patience

Minisport (oz.minisport.com) have replacement roof skins for rovers for around $500 or so, why bother wasting time cutting up another one to fit. Cut, clean up edges, glue, clamp and drink beer. Sounds like an easy saturday

Yeah i have been looking into the new panel option too. Its the $950ish shipping that makes it a bit less appealing but it sure would make it easier.

If you ask them nicely a local supplier might bring one in via container seafreight.
I would ask Karcraft.

seems like there a lot of mini enthusiasts out there that don't know what they are doing .if you replace the roof skin glue the new one on don't remove the outside flange on the old skin disc sand it until reasonably flat glue the new roof on do not prime the panel, clean metal, both parts clamp and let cure ,use a good 2 part panel bond new regs say also small weld on each corner MIG.
the roof can also be repaired ,you just have to know how to do it.If you cut through the pillars make cardboard templates ,support car before cutting. Butt weld, reinforce behind weld ,about 6 hrs work. Cant go in to more detail as I am getting confused even though I have replaced numerous roof panels in my last life.

Thanks guys. I did a bit of a ring around to chase a new roof panel and got a real mix of answers both saying that the rover roof is different to clubman/round nose and that any mini roof panel will fit a rover.
At this stage i am thinking ill go with the new panel glued on and im beginning to believe they will all fit even if there is some differences in shape and gutter type Once i decide which one to buy ill easily do a measure up and confirm and post what i find here.

Thanks again for all the help.
