I used to own an MX-5 with the sealed battery in the boot. I was told it had to be sealed to prevent the fumes from getting into the boot.
At the risk of asking a dumb question, are sealed batteries being used in Minis in order to reduce the risk of corrosion? :?

Nope, never seen a sealed battery in a road Mini... and the boot is not sealed off from the cabin, either.

Besides the extra cost and the fact that they don't perform as well at high temperatures, is there any reason why Mini owners aren't switching over? I'm guessing that it would reduce the rust problem as well as act as cheap health insurance (the Mazda dealer told me that if I carried something absorbant in the boot such a bread that it could absorb the battery fumes which could then possibly poison me :!: :!: - could have been a good story for gouging a new sealed battery out of me).

If your charger is regulating properly then the only thing coming off your battery is hydrogen and oxygen - explosive but not poisonous. Minis are ventilated enough to not be worried about hydrogen build up. However if your battery "boils" due to a faulty regulator then acid fumes can be given off and that is what causes all the corrosive problems around the battery. The vapours are faily heavy and are not going to get as far as the cabin to cause any problems to you breathing them in.

Ok, will rephrase that.. I am a burnt out wire burner and yes it is like riding a bike, you never forget.

I am retired from the welding game and have been for 10yrs and won't be going back to it...Ever. But I still dabble in it for my own needs.

Nope, no story behind the "Smokie" tho until I started to wear glasses I was welding by braille but that was no good on the fingers...

No

Although the panel is cut, so I'll weld it in friday and fix the battery box aswell so at least the boot will be done  ....

I spent most of the day trying to figure out how to fit the front pans and cutting out various bits and pieces which will be patching bits of the floor...The drivers side of the floor is in pretty bad shape and we've cut out the bad parts, but Dad and I are trying to figure out what to do due to the fact the channels dont match.

Im going to replace most of it as a result, although Im not sure if i should weld over some existing parts which arent rusty(although ill treat them anyway)(its a MUCH easier job this way, but also a little dodgy) or to cut it all out and weld it in. The RH side inner guard seems to be pretty stuffed as well, which looks like it needs attention before that anyway.

To shut the RC40 up just add a front box, even a cherry bomb would help.
