".Nothing's happened yet because I'm still restoring it and thought I'd wait to deal with the registration at the end of the process. ..... "

I would be making a few discrete enquires... In NSW you are liable for stamp duty when you change registered owner. Stamp duty is reckoned at a percentage of the vehicles value. IME they accept your valuation (never had them ever ask to look at the car).

However, while I don't know if SA has similar regulations, you would really want them to value the vehicle at it's pre-restoration condition...

Cheers, Ian

I bought a car out of a shed that'd been stored for over 10 years. I made sure the receipt had all the identification numbers on it, I also wrote "unroadworthy condition" or similar so they knew why it was so cheap. The transfer form says market value or sale price, whichever is higher

Luckily it came with the old rego papers so it was a simple transfer at the RTA (although I had to hand back the original number plate)

No offence meant to either Morbo28 or Slide...but what an epic fail for their respective state authorities...what a joke!
No offence taken :)

The situation is pretty screwy. But given the situation as it is, there's not much else they can do I don't think.

There's nothing on the computer systems to check
They are not going to pay millions to digitise the mostly irrelevant archive of info
They aren't going to launch an investigation in court to prove or disprove ownership
So it's either ban the car from ever being registered again or take a stat dec. I guess at least with a stat dec you can be charged if you lied. I told the truth about where I got it from, provided a receipt as proof of ownership.

I dunno, maybe there's a storage place with this old paper based info, but it would be a pain in the arse to sort through! :)
