Most stocko BMC cams were .012" (cold). If it's an aftermarket one but you have no idea what it is, I'd set to .015". :wink:

so what is a correct figure for static timing?

I checked mine today and it was 10* at idle (Pulsar dizzy). That OK? I have NFI.... :? I think book says 5* for Lucas dizzy.

As I said on MSN chat, best with Pulsar and old worn Lucas etc dizzys generally is to forget static- set it to 30* full advance at 4000+ rpm (or wherever the advance ceases) using a timing light.
I do this by putting TDC and 30* marks on the crank pulley.
31mm measured around the 1098/1275 balancer is 30*. :wink:

30* total is pretty right for most A series. If yours needs a little more (like mine) or less for max performance that's fine, but ffs mark the pulley when you've got it right, then you can get it spot-on next time. :lol:
