Hitting one hammer with another is not a clever thing to do. :( I had a a chip fly off one ball-peen hammer and slice into my hand after trying that trick. The Doc removed most of it but there's still a bit of shrapnel floating around in my palm which comes to the surface occasionally  . I''ve used a scissor type splitter ever since and used it on everything from Range Rovers to Minis, they work well and are much safer!

"And here come the safety marshalls"

My brother is an eye surgeon. He wants to buy a Ricer 350Z but that's another story. He sees a lot of people with shards of metal in their eye, which is worse than a couple of sparks from a grinder. Almost always it is from hitting metal on metal (as described in this thread). The bigger mass of a shard of metal (I think) means it goes deeper into the eye, and he has to use a needle to coax it out - obviously with no anaesthetic. Gives me the screamin' hab-dabs thinking about it, so I always grab some safety glasses or goggles. And so should you.

PS. I bought a scissor-type ball joint seperator as mentioned from SuperCheap - no bolt. Not much use.

If big willy is that bad a shot that he can hit both hammers instead of the balljoint in that small space then he better go buy that splitter. As for me, as an old blacksmith/boilermaker/welder give me a couple of good hammers anyday.

When a Doctor checks my eyes he can nearly always tell I was a welder by all the burn marks in my eyes. I did my trade before safety was a real issue and coped a few hot bits in both eyes over the years from grinders.

Err, correct me if I'm wrong but should you not take the nut off the ball joint first?

Well here's a story: I broke 2 of those ball joint separator thingies to get mine apart... although mine were made in china crap. I eventually used a fork splitter and it did the job. After I split it once, the come off really easy every time after that. It's just that it probably hasn't come off in years and was tight as a Chinese Mother-in-law

I used a different method and didnt involve much strength cos im weak :D what you do it jack the car up, then put a peice of hardwood or something unter the top arm thing then lower it a bit leaving the nut just above the thread, then you can beat the top of the nut and it should pop off pretty easy, i think J_A_M told me this, i think i have some pics if you want em, and for the bottom jack up from the nut and hit the arm ;) ;) easy peasy, left drum removal time, 4 hours, right drum removal time 10 minutes...or so
